Match report Radlett pulls a Tricker from its sleeve……

Radlett C.C 2nd XI v Hitchin at Cobden Hill – Saturday 5th July

Never had more pressure been placed on this 2nd XI outfit so eager to record a convincing win over higher-placed opposition. Hitchin boasted the luxury of sitting pretty at the helm of the Hertfordshire First Division, whilst the home side languished mid-table 5 players short of its regular line-up. For the cricketing purist the signs pointed to an uphill battle for an understrength Radlett.

Both captains would quietly admit that losing the toss was an equation that might fall in their favour. As it turned out the Hitchin captain fancied his side’s chances of racking up a substantial total on a green-top wicket that had an air of uncertainty to it.

Radlett’s opening duo of Simon Jackson and Gary Burchett delivered 20 overs of disciplined strike bowling that saw the league leaders capitulate to a mere 34 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Battling to keep the run-rate ahead of the number of overs bowled, Hitchin relied on a middle order run-flurry to stabilise their less than flattering position. Diligent and aggressive fielding from Radlett’s new recruits compounded Hitchin’s woes even further. If the fancied favourites thought their afternoon could take a more sobering tone, enter the right-arm prowess of Jonathan Tricker. Yet to make an absorbing impact for the second eleven, Tricker produced that consistent short-of-a-length spell that resigns batsmen to swing the willow in hope of a breakthrough. Apart from his full-toss throwaway wicket early in the piece Tricker’s 5-wicket haul for just 49 runs put Radlett in a commanding position to dent the pride of the overwhelming favourites. Ripped apart to the core by Radlett’s finest attacking display in the field so far this season, Hitchin had to settle for a paltry 146 runs off 52 overs.

Missing the dexterity of opening elder David Robinson, Radlett required a deeper resolve from the top order. Losing two cheap wickets of Jonathan Freedman and Matthew Cousens left the batting side precariously placed at 14 for 2. Enter Zimbabwean all-rounder Brendan Hutchings and big Nigel Barlow to cement Radlett’s winning position. In complete contrast to Hitchin’s XI these two decisively dominated a loose bowling attack scoring in free and dynamic fashion. Hutchings takes the batting plaudits ending on 69 Not Out with Barlow assisting with a comfortable 53 Not Out. Overs were never an issue to this ever-improving Radlett 2nd XI who now face a well-placed Bishop’s Stortford to command a more prominent position in this competitive league.

Radlett CC Second 2nd XI won the match by 8 wickets.
