Match report
Robbie Helps Reign in Mymms
Another hot and sunny afternoon greeted Radlett IIs as they arrived at North Mymms this week to play their ninth league game of this seasons campaign. With a dry outfield and a hard wicket, a hatful of runs seemed imminent and after winning a useful toss, Mymms were clearly very pleased to be batting first.
Despite the conditions, it was, in fact, Radlett that were to benefit from the early exchanges with Captain Matt Cousens picking up a wicket with only the tenth ball of the match. Not to be outdone by his skipper, Gary Burchett, who bowled another solid spell with the new ball, grabbed Radlett's second wicket with the score on 35. But from there, Mymms' Captain and opening bat Andy Lewis, began to play with some fluency on his way to a well struck century, as the home side started to accelerate the scoring.
At 160 for 3, North Mymms looked as though they were going to bat themselves into an unassailable position. However Radlett, and in particular young Bob Crocker, had other ideas. Crocker's five wicket haul (5 for 81 from 17 overs) helped Radlett reign the batting side in as his ripping off-breaks cut through the Mymms middle order. Ably abetted by his spin-twin partner, David "Yoda" Hegarty, Radlett were able to take the last 7 wickets for only 50 runs as they bowled the home side out for 211.
In reply, Radlett's opening pair of Chaudry and Robinson once again provided a solid start taking the score to 65 before the loss of Chaudry, run out for 29. Robinson then continued his rich vain of form to move the score steadily along to 155 for 3, forming a particularly effective partnership with young rookie Dean Taylor.
At that stage, Radlett appeared to be in the driving seat, needing just 56 from the remaining 11 overs with 7 wickets in hand. But the loss of Taylor for 34 slowed the visitor's momentum and as the run rate crept up, Radlett struggled to stay in touch.
The innings eventually closed with the score on 188 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, David Robinson finishing with a valiant 84 not out.
Match drawn. And although the final scores may not have reflected it, this was a game that the Radlett players will feel they could have, and probably should have won. Radlett can be reasonably happy with the way they performed however, as this was a good performance away from home against a good side. Come the return fixture and I fancy the result may go their way.
