Radlett CC Won 7 wickets

Match report On Song Burchett Hits the Right Note

Radlett IIs completed their second win of the season on Saturday and did so in an utterly convincing manner. A thoroughly polished performance by the home side saw Harpenden soundly beaten by 7 wickets on a beautifully sunny afternoon at Cobden Hill, that helped round off an altogether successful day for Radlett Cricket Club. This was a significant win for Radlett IIs and takes them within 12 points of fourth placed side North Mymms who they meet next week, in another important local clash.

Saturday was a hot day and with a hard and fast looking pitch, a high scoring game could be on seemed imminent. Thus the foundations of Radlett's victory were based around a very straightforward game plan - win the toss, stick the opposition in, restrict them as much as possible and with a strong batting line-up, look to knock them off.

And so it began. Radlett won the toss and set about their task with a real sense of energy and enthusiasm. Harpenden too came out aggressively with the clear intention of building a big target. However the home side's opening bowlers maintained an exceptional line and with some committed fielding, noticeably from young Simon Gray, the batting side became more and more frustrated.

Within only a few overs, Radlett made the initial breakthrough with young English wannabe Gary Burchett taking the wicket . Three more followed for the fast bowler, as extravagant movement both in the air and off the pitch proved too much for the top order. David Hegarty's left arm darts were tough to get away and with the immense experience of the silver shadow that is Ian Edwards, Radlett were able to retain a stranglehold on the visitors. On a wicket that warranted far more, Harpenden were restricted to just 147 all out.

In reply, Radlett's batsmen made light work of the visitor's attack. Jim Chaudry scored his second half-century in as many games and the prolific David Robinson ended unbeaten on 42 not out. James Lewis played a delightful little cameo innings towards the end also finishing on 41 not out, with Radlett reaching the target for the loss of just three wickets.

Radlett's performance was purposeful and professional, with the whole side contributing. But it was Burchett's aggressive opening spell of 4 for 33, ripping out the heart of Harpenden's line up, which was to provide the catalyst for the win.

When this team performs they are capable of beating any side in the league. Consistency is what they must now strive for.
