Radlett CC 5th XI v North Mymms IV on Sat 02 Sep 2006 at 12:30
Radlett CC Won 74 runs

Match report This week’s final Division 12 clash took the titanic fifth team to the cauldron of cricket our very own Queens school. North Mymm’s had nothing to lose except to add another win to their belt whereas Radlett had confirmed promotion and the division crown about 2 weeks ago.

Vikram conveniently won the toss and elected to bat on a wettish but hard track with an overcast and showery day ahead. A somewhat different decision to the normal of bowling first and see what we have to chase scenario.

Openers Peter Warne and Oliver Jackson strut along and the colts opening bowling pair did not trouble them until Peter was caught followed soon by Oliver. Simon Watman joined Nick Robinson and a tidy partnership ended once the prodigious stroker Simon was bowled. Nick meanwhile had tried to clear the ring many a time and was looking in good touch. He gave a few chances and was dropped at least 3 times. By this time the indomitable Paul Rich had firmly established his presence at the crease and was ready to let loose. Nick finally gave a catch to be dismissed for 13. There was then a middle order collapse which resulted in being 71 for 8. Chris Griffiths hit his debut run and first ever 4 for Radlett which was cause for celebration until he was sensationally run out at the danger end. The score was 77 for 9 which looked like it spelt the end of the road for Radlett. But what followed is bound to go down in the annuls of 5th XI history, if not club folklore.

Shabbir Foyez was joined by Keerthi Sirimanne. The former is a bowler who bats occasionally and the latter a bowler who did his batting well over 2 decades ago! Shabbir was seeing and timing the ball well and just hit the bad ball time after time to the boundary. Keerthi flashed the willow continually and was in only his 2nd innings of the season. For the last 24 overs of the match North Mymms were in a state of shock they could not dislodge this Asian pair who were glued to the crease like magnets. Keerthi was stroking the cherry away furiously and in only his first 15 minutes at the crease he chiselled a 6 straight. The total grew - 100 was passed and the fear of a low total had disappeared. And so they continued – 150 came and went in the 43rd over. It has to be said that many chances were given but North Mymms failed miserably to hang on to just one. The memorable partnership ended in the 52nd over with the total on 198, Keerthi and Shabbir had put on 121 in 25 overs for the 10th wicket. Shabbir finished on 66 with 10 4’s and Keerthi was stranded on 48 not out with 1 six and 4 4’s. Keerthi, through most of the partnership, turned down a 3rd run but did manage some swift singles all the same.

North Mymms had bowled very averagely and Radlett’s batsman had only themselves to blame for leaving it up to the last pair to set a significant total, especially as Rajput had 5 good seamers from which to choose.

Radlett opened up with Neil Lederman and Vikram. Neil really opened up with his swing and took a wicket with the 6th bowl of the first over with the top of the bails. Vikram opened up with a maiden fourth time this season. In the 2nd over Vikram got the opener outside edge caught behind heard very clearly which the umpire just did not consider. The match was thoroughly there to play for so without causing any controversy or outrage the openers continued and Neil bowled well to concede only 22 runs in his 7 over allocation. Vikram managed to tie down the opener who refused to walk and basically struggled from the same end for 4 overs. Keerthi took over the other end and he found his line in the 2nd over clean bowled the other opener in his 3rd over. The wickets were falling and with 3 wickets down N. Mymms were on the back foot managing only 3 runs an over. Keerthi was doing well and again struck in his 7th over with 2 wickets a catch by Simon Watman which nearly was dropped as Peter nor Simon called for it and another bowled. Peter Warne was given an over but he definitely found out that bowling pace in a match is not the same as in the nets he got stroked for 16 so got taken off. Michael Williams was brought on but struggled and really did not produce the goods. Neil was reintroduced to the attack in the 30th over. By this time the captain had enforced a tight fielding places and batsman were restricted as there was a silly mid on and silly mid off putting pressure on. Neil produced good length bowls and a good catch was taken off him by Vikram at silly mid on with one hand which was tricky and needed a sharp reaction. Shabbir caught one too with a diving catch at mid on which took the opener now Lederman was on 3 wickets. Shabbir was in the attack now and he bowled well enough but didn’t get any wickets in his 4 overs. The last pair were batting for a miracle as North Mymms did not have the bowlers but Radlett did have the firepower to remove them in the next 10 overs. The last 12 overs required 80 runs so required rate was well over 7. Lederman struck a fourth time to clean bowl the youngster for the 9th wicket. A few chances were dropped to secure the last wicket but then Nick Robinson at 1st slip caught their captain for an edge for a diving low catch.

The atmosphere was ecstatic and Radlett had grabbed a win from the jaws of defeat. North Mymms appreciated the division winners formidable form and depth of cricket to end the season triumphantly.
