Radlett CC 5th XI v Waltham X Rosedale III on Sat 05 Aug 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 52 runs
Match report
The match hailed as clash of the titans saw a super confident Waltham 3rd team arrive at Queens school to dethrone the mighty Radlett from top position. What unfolded on the day was quite the opposite and displayed a complete performance by Radlett in the second half. We lost the toss and Waltham elected to field.
Also not having batted at Queens school first all season was new ground for the team. The youth pair of Vishal and Neel were making batting look easy and both had timing and shot selection to dominate bowling. Vishal easily pushed balls around the park and progressed nicely. Neel got into a groove and looked comfortable until he ran out of steam calling for a 2nd run to the danger end – run out. In came out of practise Kailash whose batting look out of sorts out on 1. Peter Warne who proved to be the thorn for the opposition did not make bowling a happy task. He despatched a lofty 6 and a couple of boundaries before falling to a straight one. Nick and Vikram were the new pair joining at the crease and they both fell cheaply to poor shots and seemed out of practise. Soon to follow Ramesh and Ron were not in for too long and the score and crept up to 92 for 7. The day was not over and Eddie the Eagle had a job to do he defended well and hit the bad balls when given the opportunity. Matt had a quick fire innings reaching double figures but just like all Radlett men he had got himself out rather than the bowling doing anything. A crucial last wicket stand of 35 with Neil Lederman was key to achieving a defendable total. The innings folded on 138 all out. The bowling was quite average and it is quite assured that Waltham are yet to strike fear into opposition batsmen to date.
Radlett knew there was going to be a result and highly unlikely Waltham would need to bat out for a draw. There was much enthusiasm in the field and the proceedings began with Matt Barrett and Neil Lederman combination of left and right hand was splendid. Batsman did not find their line and struggled to lay bat onto both bowlers. Neil was denied a few good shouts for lbw and one that was plumb. Soon after Matt removed the opener clean bowled for 1. This followed by Neil trapping the other opener quickly for this time the appeal was given. Waltham knew all was not rosy at 22 for 2 when another wicket fell Matt had again bowled to nicely dislodge the bails. The number 4 seemed to be able to bat and proved it by hitting some clean off drives for 4. This seemed ominous with such a nominal target.
More wickets fell with a smart catch at mid on by Nick to have Waltham reeling at 27 for 5. Matt now was showing true class as he swung the bowl late with accurate pace deliveries to the surprise of Kailash as he had a job stopping them. Another wicket fell to Matt’s bowling as he brought the house down with stumps travelling to make a mess of the wicket. It was jubilant for Radlett as cries of 138 seems a long way away now. Waltham a team packed full of adult cricketers had met their match with youth and experience they were on the back foot big time on 32 for 6. The captain was scampering to get off the mark for over 10 minutes he finally fell lbw for 0 another victim of Matt’s bowling to bag him a 4 wicket haul. This was not enough for him and Vikram cried 2 more wickets and you will have 7 and that’s the most wickets taken by a 5th team bowler. So now the picture was entirely grey for Waltham. A bowling change brought Ron on early and he managed to get a wicket in his 2nd over by bowling the batter his leg bail. Ron was celebrating his 2nd wicket of the season. The batsman with such an easy target could not settle at all. The bowling was brilliant and they had only themselves to blame if they weren’t getting runs. The score read 51 for 8 and the fight wasn’t over yet as Waltham were ready to take the bull by the horns and charge forward. What they failed to realise was that any type of confidence was going to be 2nd place to pure brilliance of Matt’s bowling and the desire to win on the whole by the team. The pair at the crease put on 34 runs. The mainstay of the innings was number 4 and he had hung around for a some overs when mistimed a shot and was bowled by Matt to rip the leg stump out and Waltham were in real trouble with 8 down and no real batting quality left. Next ball was magical Matt dug a ball right in the slot at yorker length and batsman prodded to avoid being bowled and got the edge to gully where Neel pounced to catch the ball. Amazing first time this year a bowler was on a hat trick and it was safe to say that Radlett were close to having the game won. All fielders were called in close for the final wicket and a possible chance of a hat trick. Unfortunately this was denied by a high ball being called no ball. Throughout the match Peter’s vocals had been on the go and opposition just could not get into a stride when they batted. But now Peter was going to let his hands do the talking as number 11 batsman did not have a clue he lobbed one safely to Peter at silly mid off. At this moment the batsman cheekily claimed it had bounced and Matt replied saying don’t think so batsman.
Radlett had forced a memorable victory out of the clutches of a shocking defeat possibility. Waltham were surprised and shocked by the level of performance we gave and buzz we created. The final score read 86 all out so winning margin of 52 runs. Radlett confirmed to Waltham that this is why we are number 1 in the table for the 8th week running.
There were overall mediocre contributions by the batsman but it was truly a bowlers day. Man of the match was Matt Barrett for match winning performance with 7 for 31 in 12 overs and 3 maidens.
This positions Radlett a clear 65 points on 2nd position Waltham in Division 12 with 3 matches to play we are well positioned for a memorable season with promotion and possibly the title up for grabs.
