Old Albanians II v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 09 Sep 2006 at 12:30
Radlett CC Lost 9 wickets
Match report
Radlett IV missed promotion when they lost by nine wickets at Old Albanian, falling well short of the seven points they needed. This was their first Division Six defeat for almost three months, 10 matches, in a splendid second half of the season.
Matt Bell won the toss and gave his batsmen the chance to earn glory. Unfortunately the Albanian pitch was slow and offered uneven low bounce, which made the target score of 185 unlikely. In fact Radlett were bowled out for 89, too paltry to make life difficult for the deserved champions. As Leverstock Green, the club gaining promotion from the Radlett slip-up, turned up to watch proceedings and to gloat from the boundary, the afternoon was almost too much to bear.
After the early loss of Bell, the total moved on to 32 before Charlie Randall was lbw to one that kept low, James Eyre was bowled driving and Richard Hardy flapped a catch to gully for a duck on the same total. With Radlett’s four main run-scorers departing for so little, the course of the match seemed settled. Jamie Wells battled gamely for his 24, the top score, but the middle order and tail could make nothing of the bowling.
Bell said: “This wasn’t about missing promotion in one match. It was about a whole season. We had our chances to go up before this. We were almost relegated last year, so this summer has to be viewed as very successful.”
The key to Radlett’s upturn was the arrival of James Eyre, a self-styled drifter known as Dizzie for a likeness to his Australian compatriot Jason Gillespie. The fast bowler finished as one of the Herts League pyramid’s top all-rounders with 543 runs and 47 wickets. His presence added consistency to the side rather than a cutting edge, as only five matches were won during the campaign, but a colossal number of bonus points almost earned a surprise promotion.
The fourths were the only side of the five Saturday teams not to go up, but they perhaps had most to be proud of.
