Match report Radlett IV need seven points from their game at Old Albanian on Saturday to guarantee promotion from Division VI after their disappointing draw against Southgate Compton.

Radlett were put in by their promotion rivals on a difficult pitch at Cobden Hill and were dismissed for 171 in 48 overs. It seemed a competitive score and that proved to be the case as James Eyre and Chandana Meepagama tied the batsmen down completely, but ultimately Matt Bell was unable to force victory in the remaining 52 overs and immediate promotion.

The bowlers had about eight overs to take the last two wickets in murky light and failed to do the trick. Compton’s last pair actually held on without too much problem for the final three overs.

Depth in batting again gave Radlett the edge over their opposition. Eyre’s 45 ensured a good start, and Chris Brown, down at No 9, batting exceptionally well for his 31 not out after the score had slipped to 100 for six. Most batsmen, with Hemal Malde, 16, looking secure on his debut, chipped in after Charlie Randall had been run out by a sensational direct hit. The extra bonus points helped and there was always a good victory chance.

Eyre bowled fast and fairly straight, giving little away to take his season’s haul to 46 wickets. In fact of the 29 runs he conceded 16 were rockets through or past the slip cordon, and he fired in a four overthrows to spoil Meepagama’s run of maidens. Chris Brown and Richard supported well, but unfortunately nothing went to hand in the later stages as Compton tried to keep wickets in hand for a late assault. A run-out by Malde broke a useful stand and ended Compton’s flickering promotion hopes.
