Match report Radlett IV were indebted to Matt Soffair, 16, for taking them to a commanding score of 208-8 against Division Six promotion rivals Abbots Langley II at Cobden Hill in one of the few games spared by the rain. Victory did not materialise, but the 18 points for the draw made up ground on all the top teams.

Opener Soffair, showing maturity beyond his years, struck the ball sweetly on the leg side and defended well when necessary in an innings of 75, his maiden fifty at this level. Skipper Jamie Wells was yorked for a duck in the second over, but Soffair and the veteran Charlie Randall (42) put on 98 for the second wicket before Randall lost patience within sight of his sixth league fifty of the season.

It is rare for batsmen as young as 16 to impose themselves so readily on a game, but Soffair’s clean strokes on an awkward pitch suggested a future full of runs. He was dismissed swatting at a bouncer from a change bowler’s first delivery, looking quite capable of progressing to a fluent century.

The rest of the order struggled by comparison – even leading scorer James Eyre, who played round a straight one -- though Tony Johnson, Kailash Morjaria and Toby Sutherland managed to push the total above the 200 for maximum batting points. Wells declared one over early.

Eyre bowled with discipline and pace in reply to finish with five victims, taking his season’s haul to 40 wickets. Abbots had to bat very well for victory, but tight bowling from Eyre and Chandana Meepagama shoved them behind the rate. Aided by a couple of dropped catches, the visitors did well to reach 180 for eight, though the miserable six points more or less scuppered their promotion hopes.
