Leverstock Green II v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 13:00
Match was Drawn
Match report
Five minutes of music hall mayhem ruined Radlett IV’s chances in their Division Six promotion match at Leverstock Green II. They bungled a match for the first time in an otherwise consistent season, gathering only four points from the draw to remain in fifth place instead of climbing higher.
The loss of three wickets in one over out of the blue wrecked Radlett’s pursuit of 200 after Tony Johnson and Charlie Randall had taken Radlett’s score into the 50s for one wicket down after the first-ball departure of Dinesh Yogendra. The veterans were starting to attack a run-rate that had risen towards six an over when Johnson clipped a low return catch to a medium-pace seamer.
Next ball James Eyre pushed forward to one that popped, to be caught at short extra cover. Two deliveries later Jamie Wells was run out in freakish circumstances. Radlett’s captain set off for two runs to the third man area and would have beaten the throw easily if he had not lost his grip on the bat when it jammed in the ground a foot short of the crease.
On a dry unpredictable pitch new batsmen naturally had difficulty in forcing the pace, though Luca Guerrini hit some good boundaries and Toby Sutherland batted well to save the game. Randall found the boundary regularly enough, but when he holed out, misjudging a stiff breeze, for his fifth fifty of the season Radlett’s last chance of a reasonable total disappeared.
Radlett took three early wickets in an excellent start to the match, reduced to 46 overs after rain. Eyre claimed two quick victims, including one with a lifter in the first over, and Chandana Meepagama induced a bat-pad catch to short-leg, conceding only four runs in his first 10 overs.
Eyre found the edge of the No 5 batsman’s bat, the ball lobbing up slowly off Guerrini’s glove to the slips, where the chance agonisingly went down. Even more agonisingly the batsman went on to score a fine century, taking the match clean away from Wells’s men. The rest of his colleagues struggled until a well executed slog fest in the final overs.
Radlett need a strong showing in next Saturday’s home match against Abbots Langley to stay in the hunt.
