Radlett CC 4th XI v Old Camdenians on Sat 05 Aug 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 9 wickets
Match report
Radlett IV cruised to their third win in a row with a nine-wicket thrashing of Old Camdenians at Cobden Hill and they jumped another place in Division Six to fifth, a handful of points outside the promotion mix.
With a slick outfield and fast pitch, Camdenians’ total of 186 proved nowhere near enough to test Radlett, as James Eyre, opening for the first time – probably in his life -- and Charlie Randall put on 141 for the first wicket at more than five runs an over.
Eyre, eventually playing on for a chanceless 80, dispatched his first two balls, both full tosses, for violent leg-side boundaries and scored regularly with classic drives. In fact he had passed 30 by the time Randall opened his account.
Randall ignored the jeering and taunts from The Hill mob – well, J Crocker -- to provide Eyre with solid support and the veteran began to pick up the scoring as Camdenians desperately donated Eyre singles. When Matt Soffair replaced Eyre, the ball continued to fly. He showed exceptional striking power for an under-16 player, pulling a magnificent six. Randall finished 73 not out, his fourth fifty of the season.
The damage had been done by Chandana Meepagama, bagging his first five-wicket haul of the summer and finding the sort of accuracy that made him feared last season. Relegation-threatened Camdenians spent 20 overs reaching the 40 mark, with Richard Hardy holding a splendid slip catch off Eyre.
Meepagama picked up three victims as the batsmen attempted to break free. A revival rapidly increased the tempo, but Hardy’s all-sorts spin broke a dangerous stand, and Meepagama returned to mop up the tail.
The afternoon was very much enhanced by the presence of two good umpires, including our own Bernie Soffair, and a scorer, Laura Lambert. They did a fine job, and Radlett IV’s thanks go to both for giving up their time.
Radlett visit fourth-placed Leverstock Green next Saturday for the first in a series promotion tussles.
