Radlett CC 3rd XI v West Herts II on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 13:00
Match was Drawn
Match report
This was a vital game for both teams. West Herts were placed second in the league, but having a couple of ordinary performances behind them, and Radlett, three places behind, bursting with confidence and playing well. Everything to play for.
W. Herts won the toss on Radlett's excellent wicket, and in attacking vein elected to bowl. Big mistake. The ball did misbehave to an extent, but this didn't bother Radlett's opening bats, Ashley Tillett and Dom Ingram. Ingram hit his first ball for four, and Tillett continued, played sublimely, as his wont, then got himself out, as is his wont, having hit 33 at better than a run a ball. Tillett's batting is like a a teenager making love, it's great while it lasts but finishes too soon, and leaving you wanting more. He hit the ball with majestic authority, but when he learns to build an innings, he wil make a mountain of very quick runs , and probably never play at 3rd XI level again.
Simon Randall batted faultlessly but was bowled by the best ball of the game for 21, to be replaced by Paul Windmill. When Windmill was 14 he was dropped in schoolboy fashion by West Herts' captain. This was their second big mistake. Windmill went on to hit the next 47 balls for a further 77 runs. Paul has a brilliant eye, and hit the ball to all quarters, assisting Dom Ingram in adding 165 in 25 overs in entertaining fashion.
When Smithers declared the innings at 269 for 2 after 51 overs, Windmill was 91 not out, and Ingram 114 not out. This was Ingram's second hundred in three weeks, and was a faultless display of mature and well-timed batting at just under a run a ball, he underpinned a superb batting display against good bowling on a good wicket.
This was a good declaration. Remember that W. Herts had no points at this stage, and Radlett 10 points. Smithers could have batted W. Herts out of the game, but he held out the carrot, which he knew the opposition had no choice but to chase.
Radlett started with the old ball, and W. Herts needed 270 to win from 49 overs. For the second time in two weeks it didn't work. 45 for nothing after 9 overs was spookily like last week. Also like last week, when we took the new ball we almost immediately had success. Ollie Robertson and Brian Dümmer reduced them to 64 for 4 and after that the chase was never on in earnest. Two catches and a stumping by Luffman led the way for another excellent fielding display, along with a great catch at slip by Dümmer, and a stunning catch from Teddy Edwards.
Robertson bowled beautifully taking 2 for 41 at two an over, Dummer incisively for four wickets, Rose quickly but strangely for no return. The spinners were Arumugam who bowled well without success, but Tillett immediately hit the spot with massive turn, and gave us hope of victory with two important wickets.
But on this wicket it wasn't enough to win the game. Despite attacking fields throughout, W. Herts ended 88 runs short at the end with eight wickets down. They gained 3 points from the game, and Radlett got 18 points. This was fair return because they were thoroughly outplayed by an excellent batting and bowling performance by Radlett.
Radlett are hoping to be a division higher next year. Today was a good test of what level one would expect the other teams to be in division 4. If this is the case, please bring it on quickly, because given today's performance, Radlett's 3rds could well finish in the top third of the division above next year.
Not a win, but a powerful display. Should this level of performance continue unabated for the next four games, this side will take their rightful place in a higher division next year.
