Oxford & Horspath v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 23 Aug 2003 at 11:00

Match report
Any remaining lingering doubts about relegation were blown away by a much improved league performance by Radlett at Oxford’s St Katherine’s College ground.
Having won the toss and electing to bat skipper Nick Fielden may have initially regretted his decision as he was soon trudging back to the pavilion for a duck. It was the first of 5 wickets for veteran off spinner Rupert Evans. Evans who played at Cobden Hill in 1993 when the touring Australian test team played England amateurs bowled unchanged and returned excellent figures of 5-83
The fact that Radlett eventually reached 205 for 7 was in part due to a patient 51 from Jim Chaudry and good support from Matt Evans (36), James Lewis (32) and Jon Freedman who added extra impetus at the end of the innings and finished unbeaten on 28.
In reply Oxfords innings exploded into life in 13th over as after a steady start Kervin Marc dismissed 3 of the home teams batsman in a devastating 4 ball spell. The final wicket was a well taken catch by James Lewis at third man which left Oxford in deep trouble at 41-3.
However Oxford batted themselves back into the game with Evans junior striking 46 and Nambiar hitting 60. However the introduction of Haydn Smith swung the game back in Radlett’s favour. Although initially it was Stuart Browne who broke the partnership by having Evans caught behind the wicket by Dave Houghton who was playing his last match for Radlett before returning to Zimbabwe, Smith took 4 wickets in 7 tight overs and in the process returned seasons best figures of 4-14. His heroics however could not quite force a victory as Oxford finished on 184 –9. The 14 points taken from the game and Beaconsfield sorry defeat by champions elect High Wycombe meant that with two games remaining there is no possibility of Radlett finishing in the bottom 2.
This week Radlett travel to second placed Slough in a game with a very much end of season feel. Slough although mathematically can still catch High Wycombe it will take an almighty stumble from the reigning champions for that to happen. On Sunday Radlett make the short trip to Shenley in a bid to retain their Becker Transport cup crown in a game against Sawbridgeworth.
