Beaconsfield v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 09 Aug 2003 at

Match report
Any lingering hopes of the securing their first Home Counties Premier League championship literally melted away in the heat at Beaconsfield as Radlett were forced to settle for a draw against the lowly Buckinghamshire side.
Having lost the toss the Radlett bowlers were asked to toil away in what were the hottest conditions of the year. Although Kervin Marc achieved initial success by trapping the Beaconsfield opener LBW it was to be the visitors only joy before lunch as Storrie & Shepherd and enjoyed themselves in the sunshine.
The partnership was eventually broken by a clever piece of fielding by Stuart Browne & David Hegarty as they ran Storrie out for 62. The two also featured in Radlett’s only other wickets as they pair both claimed a wicket apiece, the bowling of Shepherd for a well deserved century marked Hegarty’s first victim in premier league cricket. However with Jeremy Batty, who was celebrating the call up to the England squad of his brother Gareth, finishing on 50 not out and O Reilly undefeated on 43 the hosts managed to post a mammoth 279.
The decision by Batty to on for 65 overs may have been a mistake as with Beaconsfield lying in 9th position and in desperate need of a win or two it was asking much of his bowlers to bowl out Radlett in only 55 overs.
In reply Radlett got off to a steady start but with Beaconsfield’s new Jamaican left arm spinner import turning the ball at right angles it was clear the game was heading for a draw. In a bizarre twist immediately after the tea interval in order to engineer a closer game and tempt Radlett into going for an unlikely victory in the hope that in the meantime lose a few wickets, Batty instructed his bowlers to bowl wides and his keeper to let the ball go to the boundary.
However with 160 still required from 25 overs and with only 7 wickets remaining the return of the overseas spinner ensured that a drawn match. Jon Freedman with 42 and a patient 34 from Stephen Lowe were the pick of the batsman as Radlett finished on 218 for the loss of 6 wickets. Radlett’s 7 points from the encounter sees them slide down the league table to 4th.
