Hemel Hempstead v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 26 Jul 2003 at
Radlett CC Won 5 wickets
Match report
On Saturday Radlett played away at Hemel. Eleven men arrived at 10 but only ten kit bags made it, James Lewis making the easy mistake of leaving his kit in the Radlett car park. On a day of forecasted unpredictable weather the toss was always going to be pretty important and Radlett won that and had a bowl.
Kervin Marc and the ever-young Stuart Browne opened up and it was Swerve who made the first strike with a lifting delivery into the body being turned round the corner into Lowey’s awaiting gloves. A tight battle ensued with the Radlett fielders looking lively and keeping the Hemel scoring in check.
Oz was brought into the attack to allow Brownie to change ends and to say he was unlucky would be an under-statement. He beat the bat a couple of times each and every over and even had one chance dropped by two different players. Hemel meanwhile were progressing at about 2.5 per over. Before lunch Kerv was brought back on and there followed a carbon copy of his first dismissal. 70-2.
The final over before lunch may have proved to be a turning point, the Hemel Ozzy pulled Swerve for two powerful boundaries, but the next ball had a bit more to it, he gloved it into the slip cauldron, unfortunately falling just short of Ian Edwards at second slip. 90-2 at lunch.
After a gourmet lunch an 11 stone heavier Radlett side took the field. With Mat Evans preferred at one end to Brownie, two overs later and Matt was left with the consolation that at least he would get a bat later. Brownie came back on and got the vital wicket of Dale, trapped LBW. 150-3.
H-bomb and Oz then bowled in tandem, the Radlett fielders dug in and the game entered the business end. Oz, who surely must have been walking under a ladder carrying a mirror on the way to the ground when a black cat jumped in front of him and he dropped the mirror, continued without luck. The Hemel Ozzy moved up his gears cracking H-bomb for a few thumping boundaries.
210-3 with 15 overs remaining. The Hemel Ozzy very generously swung Brownie to the fence where Mat Evans took a very smart running catch. This was the start of the end for Hemel as they capitulated to 229 all out, Swerve grabbing himself a very well deserved 5-wicket haul.
Radlett opened with Hampo and Fielders. Hampo promptly, in what was to become something of a pattern, smashed his first ball for four. Fielders was looking comforatable before getting a good ball that swung late and de-castled him. Out-strode Mat Evans. Not that it made any difference to Hampo, who has been in great form all year, but today he was insatiable. With exceptional timing and strokeplay he blazed his way to 85 off 61 balls and when he was finally caught on the boundary, Radlett were 105-2. It was an awesome knock and appreciated by all that saw it.
Freedman and Evans saw things through till Tea (another feast, credit must go to the tea and lunch ladies) but with the weather closing in it was decided that aggression was the best option in an attempt to finish things early. Evans and Freedman set about their task after tea with gusto. Some sharp running from both and clean timing of loose balls carried Radlett at over 6 an over. Then it rained and the players came off, then it stopped and they went back out, then they came off again, then they went back on again.
Radlett were on target for reaching the total, but the weather looked like it could ruin their day. Matt was then very unlucky to be caught off a waist high full toss, and pinch hitting Swerve came out to bat. Freedman and Swerve took Radlett to within 16, when Freedman swung across one and was caught at third man. Swerve followed shortly caught on the cover broudary. But the damage was already done and Lowey and H-bomb had just enough time to hit a couple of exquisite cover drives each before the total was reached.
All that was left was to watch Lewie model his knew clothes and the in’s and outs’ of the not out caught and bowled to be discussed.
