High Wycombe v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 12 Jul 2003 at
Match was Drawn

Match report The top two teams so far in this season’s Home Counties Premier League produced a dour draw when they met at High Wycombe’s pretty London Road ground with the only real winners being Reading & Slough who jumped a couple of places in the league to leapfrog Radlett.

The ‘Warriors’ skipper, Jason Harrison indicated his intentions as early as the toss as after winning it he elected to bat first. This being the first time the Buckinghamshire side had not batted second against Radlett in 8 meetings.

The Cobden Hill sides opening bowlers, Stuart Browne & Kervin Marc started brightly for the visitors and were quickly rewarded with the wickets of the dangerous David Taylor, bowled by Browne with a ball that nipped sharply off the seam, and Benning, who saw his off stump removed from the ground by Marc. However from then on it was hard work for all the bowlers on a pitch that offered little help and a day where temperatures soared.

For Wycombe though it was a day to bat for as long as possible. Greg Pooley effortlessly reached his half-century prior to lunch and although Harrison lacked fluency apart from some tight LBW decisions he rarely looked like giving his wicket up. By lunch Wycombe had cruised to 123-2 and a high score, which would effectively diminish Radlett’s chances of winning the game, was looking ominous.

Following lunch it was much the same story and the mammoth partnership between the Pooley & Harrison was only ended after a waist high full toss bowled by Kiwi Haydn Smith was brilliantly caught by Jim Chaudry. Chaudry made good ground before diving to his right to take a one handed catch to dismiss the unlucky Pooley for 112. Harrison & Woolfe continued the good work with Harrison notching his century shortly before the innings close with Wycombe deciding to use the full 66 over available to them they managed to accumulate 311 for the loss of just 3 wickets.

With Radlett requiring to score at almost 6 runs an over they needed a fast start to gain some early momentum. However with defensive fields set and good tight bowling it was soon clear that a draw would be the only positive result for Radlett. Nick Fielden and Nick Hampton continued their rich vein of form in an excellent first wicket stand of 91. While Fielden was eventually out for 41 Hampton continued the good work and was agonisingly 1 run short of a well-deserved century when he was bowled by a ball that almost bounced twice.

With the game almost over as an encounter it was a good opportunity for some of Radlett’s middle order to get some match practice. Chaudry was the pick of the remaining batsman with a carefully crafted 35 not out however the game petered out to the expected draw with Radlett on 203-5.

This week sees Radlett entertain Banbury at Cobden Hill in the Home Counties Premier League and they then travel to Beckenham in Kent for a crucial Evening Standard tie, which will see the winners into the last 8 of the competition.
