Basingstoke & N Hants v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 05 Jul 2003 at

Match report Radlett’s recent dip in form was well and truly put behind them with two excellent performance over the weekend.

Saturday saw the Cobden Hill side make the long trek south to Basingstoke who had won their four previous league games to shoot them up the table to 3rd just a few points behind Radlett. Their upturn in form coincided with Charl Willoughby’s return to the side. The South African who hopes to be bowling against the likes of Marcus Trescothic and Michael Vaughan in the up coming test series against England was playing his last match before returning to the South African squad.

After winning the toss ‘Stoke skipper Harris had no hesitation in inserting the visitors and letting loose the fast bowling of Willoughby. Radlett were soon in trouble as Hampton and Evans departed with the score on 11. However from that moment Radlett completely dominated the match as Nick Fielden and Steve Lowe put together the highest partnership that any two Radlett players have made in the clubs HCPL history.

Lowe’s innings of 92 was his best for the club so far in his debut season and was full of shots all round the wicket including smacking Willoughby over his head for a straight six. Although Fielden played second fiddle to Lowe during the early part of the partnership once the pair had cruised passed their half centuries he stepped up a couple of gears to scorch his way to a blistering hundred. Fielden, who was captain for the day in the absence of Dave Houghton, was only pronounced fit 24 hours before the day of the game. The left hander had been struggling for a couple of weeks since dislocating his knee however this didn’t appear to stop him producing a quite brilliant captains innings.

Although both fell before the innings closed Jim Chaudry (28) and Haydn Smith (22*) ensured a daunting total of 283 was set from their 66 overs.

In reply Radlett started with the old ball with Smith & Stuart Browne looking for early wickets. However a combination of good batting and a slow pitch meant that the visitors couldn’t claim the early wickets they were looking for. That was to be soon amended when Kervin Marc was introduced into the attack immediately removing the dangerous Lee Nurse for 25 and bowling Chandler first ball. With Robbie Crocker completing a fine run out of Maynard for 32 and Browne picking up two wickets in quick succession ‘Stoke were reeling on 100 for 5.

Hunter and Leese dug in for the home side and their 23 over partnership ensured that a draw was to be the outcome but not before Oz Edwards had given them a fright by removing Hunter for a patient 49 and Nurse Senior for a golden duck.

Radlett’s improved performance sees them stay second in the table with an exciting trip to table toppers High Wycombe next week in a clash that may go along way to deciding the destination of the championship.
