Radlett CC Lost 100 runs

Match report Radlett’s season continued on a downward spiral after they succumbed to their second successive league defeat against a highly talented Slough side. With several key players missing Radlett rarely looked like recording a victory over a team that always raises their game against the Cobden hill outfit.

The day had started promisingly with skipper Houghton winning the toss and inserting the men from Slough. The decision was immediately justified as in an amazing first over Kervin Marc picked up 2 wickets including the important wicket of danger man Russell Lane. With Stuart Browne returning with a broken finger Radlett were on top for the first half hour with numerous false shots played. However once Slough batsman Khan and Aziz had dug their team out of the initial trouble they began to impose their authority on the match. Khan scored a fluent 52 and Aziz 39 before the former was run out by Houghton and Aziz brilliantly caught by Stephen Lowe behind the wicket off Oz Edwards.

At lunch the match was evenly poised with Slough on 125 for 4 but at this point Slough skipper Bobby Sher began to control the game. His innings of 110 was one of the finest witnessed at Cobden Hill in recent years as he tormented the Radlett bowlers. Houghton had to ring the changes several times to stem the flow of runs but it was not until the departure of Sher that Radlett regained some momentum. Marc was the pick of the bowlers with 4-101 but mention must be given to Robbie Crocker who on his return to first team action bowled well but without any luck.
With Radlett set a mammoth target of 300 runs to win the game a solid start was always vital however with Sher opting to bowl himself and using the old ball with men crowded around the bat any mistakes were always going to be punished. After Hampton, Chaudry, and Houghton had all returned to the pavilion victims of bat pad catches and Smithers adjudged LBW, Radlett were staring defeat in the face at 40 for 4. Lowe & James Lewis did much to repair the damage and for long spells the pair looked to be steering Radlett to the safety of a draw.

With 30 overs remaining though Slough elected to use the new ball. The decision brought instant reward as Naylor undid Lowe’s defences with a slower ball that trapped the left hander in front of the stumps. Marc after a couple of lusty blows departed soon after and it was down to the tail to try and save Radlett.

Robbie Crocker & Oz Edwards provided stiff resistance before they became the third & fourth victims of LBW decisions. The final pairing of Lewis & Browne saw out the 120 overs that were scheduled to be bowled in the day but because of the fast over rates by both sides play continued until 7 O’clock. With 6 minutes remaining before the close number 11 Browne edged the ball to slip which although the ball did not carry the batsman looked to take a run. Lewis immediately sent his partner back but a direct hit saw Browne adjudged to be given run out.

This week sees Radlett make the long trip to Basingstoke who since the return of South Africam test bowler Charl Willoughby have won 4 out 4 games to lift themselves up the table. Radlett will be without 3 players from Saturdays defeat including the influential Houghton but welcome back Graham Dill & Matt Evans. Radlett will also give a late fitness test to Nick Fielden who is making a speedy recovery from a dislocated knee.
