Radlett CC 1st XI v Oxford & Horspath on Sat 21 Jun 2003 at
Radlett CC Lost 6 wickets

Match report Radlett’s excellent run of results came to a disappointing end at Cobden Hill on Saturday when they lost to a well drilled Oxford & Horspath side. After being inserted Radlett’s batsmen struggled a little to come to terms with both the pitch and the nature of the Oxford bowling and they consequently suffered.

That said, Radlett’s start was typically solid with Nick Fielden and Nick Hampton repelling some accurate swing bowling from Oxford’s opening pair, Laudat and Ali. Having taken the score to 57, the batsman were set the new challenge of Oxford’s skipper, Rupert Evans and his wily concoction of off-breaks and arm balls. The fact he introduced himself in only the 13th over indicated he liked the surface on which he was about to bowl. And bowl very well he did, snaring Nick Hampton at slip for 31 and soon after trapping in-form Grahamy Dill for 10.

Fielden though continued and moved in to a much more fluent vein following the lunch interval. His 79 was the bedrock upon which the Radlett innings was founded before he too succumbed to Evans. Radlett’s middle order really failed to fire and only Smith (31) and Houghton (30no) offered any real contribution. It was all credit to Evans though as he completed a marathon 27 over spell with figures of 5-27, restricting Radlett’s scoring to 30 or 40 less than they would have wished at 214-9.

Radlett’s bowler’s were a little less disciplined and that proved to be their downfall. With leading wicket taker, Stuart Browne not playing due to a broken finger, Dave Houghton was unable to curtail the Oxford batsmen’s scoring. It was Browne’s accuracy that they missed more than anything as Jobson and Cook in particular took advantage or the 1 or 2 bad balls on offer every over. In fairness, Radlett had every reason to be optimistic when they reduced Oxford to 106-4 shortly after the tea interval. They were unable to dislodge the extremely impressive Jobson however despite a fiery second spell from Kervin Marc.

The 5th wicket partnership saw Oxford home reasonably comfortably in the end with Cook arriving at the wicket to make an aggressive 59 not out. However the main plaudits must go to Jobson with his contribution of 104 not out as Oxford walked away with the 25 points. Kervin Marc finished with a creditable 3-59 but none of the Radlett bowlers will be completely satisfied with their performances on Saturday and they will need to improve in the coming weeks.

On the positive side, Radlett remain top of the HCPL after High Wycombe failed to win and they can welcome back Stuart Browne this week to lead their title charge against Slough.
