Reading v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 14 Jun 2003 at
Radlett CC Won 1 wicket

Match report Radlett stormed to their third league victory of the season in a nailbiting finale against a previously unbeaten Reading side.

Having lost the toss Radlett skipper Dave Houghton was invited to have first use of the new ball on a Reading track that over the years has been somewhat of batsman’s paradise. In this game though the 300 runs scored were at a lost of 19 wickets but crucially for Radlett the final wicket partnership of Kervin Marc & Stuart Browne brought them to victory.

Marc & Browne were the chief architects of Reading’s demise being bowled out for such a low score and both claimed 5 wickets a piece. Marc was the first to strike in a breathtaking spell of short fast bowling that had the Reading batsman hopping and ducking all over the place. His first two wickets came from batsman being unable to defend the short ball with Munir being caught of the shoulder of the bat at gully by Haydn Smith and the dangerous Perkings caught at fine leg by Browne following a top edge. When Mordt was finally adjudged out LBW for 13 Marc had reduced the Berkshire side to 30 for 3. Not wanting to be outshone Browne got in on the act by removing captain Patel and Shaw both bowled having been beaten in the flight by the Cobden Hill opening bowler. At the lunch interval Reading had lost 6 wickets for just 77 runs.

Although Sana became Marc’s fifth victim when two of his stumps were uprooted by a vicious delivery Reading dug in with Wren (34) and Edwards (21) providing stiff resistance. Both players batted sensibly and belied their lowly positions with some sweet drives eventually only falling to an LBW decision and a smart catch by Graham Dill. The final wicket and Brownes fifth brought the innings to a close on 150.

In reply Radlett got off to a nervous start with Nick Hampton bowled third ball after failing to pick Hartley’s googly and Nick Fielden caught by Munir at silly mid off also to the bowling of Hartley. However Dill and Matt Evans continued their recent good form and comfortably moved to within a 100 runs of the required target.

The game swung ominously in Reading’s favour with the introduction of Sana and the new ball. Having removed Evans with a peach of a delivery for 18 and then running Dill out for 27 Sana produced a devastating spell of bowling which also accounted for Stephen Lowe and he was unlucky not to claim further wickets. With Edwards bowling equally as well from the other end and picking up the wickets of Pickett and Smith by the time Jon Smithers joined Dave Houghton at the crease Radlett had slumped to 78 for 7 with the game all but over.

However the combination of youth and experience worked effectively with Houghton guiding the teenager Smithers through a difficult passage of play. With Houghton (39) playing his normal stylish game and Smithers (23) growing in confidence the pair took Radlett to the brink of victory only to see 2 LBW decisions bring Marc and Browne to the crease. With 2 runs required Marc decided to play positively and after missing with two almighty swings of the bat connected with the third to send ball into the next field for a huge 6 much to the relief of the visitors.
