Match report Destructive Dill Denied By Deluge

Radlett C.C. were washed out on saturday and the points shared after a fine batting performance had put them in the driving seat. Radlett’s experienced skipper and skifull tosser Dave Houghton won the toss and decided to have a bat, weather the fact that Radlett only had 9 nine at the ground influenced this decision no-one knows.

The games began at 11 in overcast conditions with Dill and Hampo leading the charge, or in Dills case the defensive block or leave. Banbury began with ex-England bowler Paul Taylor at one end and extras from the other. Neither lasted long as Radlett cruised to 60, Hampo showing his full array of shots, despite wearing one or two (or 3 or 4 in Dills case) nasty rising deliveries from Taylor. Extras hit Hampo in the box and looked well set for a bit innings, Swerve found us, Houghton saw the funny side, and Dill drove a few nicely down the ground.

The change came and with it a change of fortunes. A very confusing action caused problems for both bats and Hampo eventually fell to him playing on after an aggressive and well made 35. Steve Low, making his debut took over and was soon in his stride. The partnership grew and with Dill hitting over the top twice in the last over before lunch, and Robbie 5 hours and 350 miles after leaving home finally finding the ground, Radlett were nicely set at 108-1. Dill 44 not out.

The second session began with Taylor returning to the attack and spin from the other end. Both ends bowled well and Radlett were put under pressure, Dill faltered and on 49 offered a chance to cover, which was rejected, and to prove costly. A couple of overs later Dill forced Taylor off the back foot through the covers and brought up his fifty. Unfortunately Low was frustrated by Logolas the spinner and was caught sweeping, but the partnership had been worth 60, 120-2. The H-bomb entered the fray.

The bomb and Dilly looked to keep things moving, but some tight bowling and Hayden’s lack of spikes, which made his running resemble a teletubbie on roller skates, meant runs were hard to come by. Then it rained. 50 minutes, and a hotly contested game of one hand one bounce later and Radlet were left with 8 overs, 8 wickets and as many runs to get as possible.

As Dill squared up to Taylor Freedman confidently predicted that Taylor would bowl his 4 overs for twenty and RCC would end up about 170 at the close. 6 balls and 14 runs later Freedman decided to keep quiet. H-bomb attempted to convince Legolas that modern weapons were far superior to bows and arrows but the archer had the last laugh as the big South African missed a straight one. An even bigger man, Swerve, took three strides to reach the middle.

Dill and swerve went to work on Taylor, Dill charging and driving him at will and Swerve launching him out of the park over square leg, much to the enjoyment of the RCC players. Swerves clean hitting was ended by another Legolas arrow and Freedman came and went quickly to the same fellowship member. Dill continued unperturbed and continued to bat with control and power, now ably supported by Smudger, who thankfully wasn’t batting left handed.

Dill flayed Legolas into the car park a couple more times and in the penultimate over a two to long on gave him a well deserved and enjoyable hundred, his last 49 runs coming off only 21 balls. Smudger then decided that Dilly had been batting long enough and promptly ran him out (shouting no and running does tend to do that!!) with only a few balls remaining, giving Oz the chance to maintain his 100% stike rate, which he duly took. Radlett ended on 197 with Smudge still not out in first XI league cricket, but the plaudits went to Dill, must have been the new hair cut.

The eleven men of RCC took the field with Swerve and Hayden opening the bowling with the old ball, both bowled tight and the pressure began to mount. At this point RCC’s newest member, strangely batting for Banbury, decided to run him-self out. Or would have were it not for the fact that Dills radar was borrowed from the Iraqi army. Not to worry debutant Low gathered the throw and ran the other guy out with a direct hit. Houghton’s frustration at the only man on his side that can throw being his keeper was well kept in check. 0-1.

The number three came into bat, Fielders recognizing him from the top of the Empire State building, must have been the total eclipse that gave him away. The new ball was taken and it was game on again. Radletts twelth man decided that he really should try harder to get out and ballooned a defensive shot to mid-off, unfortunately it fell in a gap and they got two runs for it. Then it rained and rained some more. The points were split 6 each with RCC feeling they deserved more. All that was left was for Dilly to soak up the praise on a majestic debut ton and a long drive home, no Robbie it’s just down the M1!!!
