Radlett CC 1st XI v High Wycombe on Sat 10 May 2003 at
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett resumed their Home Counties Premier League experience with a tough opening encounter against reigning champions & Evening Standard Challenge Trophy winners High Wycombe at Cobden Hill. Although Wycombe swept nearly all before them last term they would have travelled to Radlett expecting a tough game as one of the Buckinghamshire sides only two competitive defeats was against the Cobden Hill side. In an almost repeat of last season the Hertfordshire side once again gave there illustrious opponents another major scare before the visitors held out for a draw

Radlett's returning former Zimbabwe test skipper won the toss and as was the case the previous season elected to bat on what turned out to be an excellent batting surface. Nick Fielden led the way for the home team with a typically redoubtable 45 before being caught behind the wicket from the final delivery before the lunch interval. Previously Matt Evans (23), Jon Freedman & debutante Haydn Smith had departed as Wycombe looked to take an early hold of the game.

Immediately following lunch Dave Houghton (30) was adjudged LBW, whilst offering no shot and at 125- 5 Radlett were precariously positioned. However the Cobden Hill battlers refused to crumble and were able to reach 206 from 63 overs, this was in part due to a solid 22 from Graham Dill and important contributions from Kervin Marc (17), Robbie Crocker (15) and Dave Hanson (14).

Set a victory target in 54 overs Radlett needed to take early wickets to have a chance of claiming something from the game. This they got through the nagging accuracy of there seamer Stuart Browne. The first of his seven wickets was a smartly taken catch at second slip by Houghton who had shown what a master tactician he is by moving himself to slip a few balls before. Radlett’s second wicket was helped by Wycombe all rounder David Taylor’s cruciate knee ligament injury. Taylor’s decision to plan, although brave, seemed bizarre as the aggressive batsman could not comfortably run. This disability leading to his partner Wright being needlessly run out.

From then on though Browne took over as he plundered wicket after wicket. Firstly former Middlesex star Greg Pooley was on his way back to the pavilion and he was soon joined there by Sawyer. Taylor after threatening to cut loose was out following an excellent catch by Matt Evans on the long on boundary and at tea Wycombe were 74 – 5 with Radlett looking likely to complete an early season victory. However Wycombe captain Jason Harrison came to the rescue of his side and in completing a chanceless 61, although keeper David Hanson was unlucky not to be awarded a sharp stumping decision, he ensured his champions did not begin the season with a defeat.

Browne finished with figures of 7 for 52 following a marathon bowling session of 27 overs but it was not enough to clinch victory for Radlett as Wycombe clung on for a draw. Radlett received 14 points in the encounter with the visitors claiming 10. This week sees Radlett attempting to continue their good form away at Banbury.
