Match report
Another evening , another round of fraught phone calls and that was just from the wife! I thought we had managed to get 11 players together as last time I looked cricket was an eleven a side game. On route to the game I get told Anuj is not playing and I go ballistic, only to find he is not on the team sheet in any event as he has to be an actor in the school play. Rumour has it he is playing a toadstool in Wind in the Willows!!!!
We arrive at fortress Langleybury on the outskirts of the Northern extremities (of Hertfordshire), just shy of the M25, to be met by Langleybury's county star who is playing as Langleybury are short of players, so he joins their 4 district players. This is a friendly B team league!!!!! Phone calls from Toby's Dad to say he has missed the entrance to the ground and is in the farm yard are met by shrills of laughter. At the ground I find there are 10 men of Radlett, with Hallett a no show and obviously declaring his intent to remove his name from the Radlett rota. It transpires Langleybury are also 10.
I am keen for everyone to have a game so tell the boys to mess around with the batting order. I think that is what I said for there can be no logical other reason than sending Baskaran senior to open!!!! Sahil and Dhylan get the innings off to a good solid start and Sahil makes 12 before playing back to a spinner having told his team mates to play forward!! Anyway Dill the dog hits some good shots, some uncultured slogs and some divine drives to end up 40 not out. The middle of the innings was slowed down by the best leg spinner I have seen at this age for some considerable time and a very good offy who gets a three for. We stumble across the finishing line with 99 but this should have been 130/140. We must learn to be a bit more positive in our running and calling if we are to do well next year at A team level.
I had said that I wanted everyone to bowl 2 overs and this is what basically happened. I could have closed the game up by allowing Daniel, Sahil, Roshan, Dhylan and Pavir to bowl 4 overs each, but this is not what this league is about.
Anyway 100 to defend and we give silly runs away in the field and then peg it back. Daniel bowls a good spell at the 2 district players and gets his reward with a well judged caught and bowled, Manjul bowls his best spell for some time and was unlucky not to get more than 1 wicket. Roshan bowled very well and with little luck, Dhylan bowled fast and straight and looks like he has improved his action. Toby swung it and Pavir paced it into the pitch but we gave away too many wides.
When we won the Under 13 league we hardly gave wides away and had we not given away 35 extras here we would have won.
Overall a fabulous game of cricket played in a great spirit between two well matched teams, with good comraderie on both sides. This team are a great team to be involved with as their team spirit is superb and if certain people dont want to play for us then so be it. Well done to all the boys for their efforts, thanks to Jonathan Webber and Stephen Caplin for watching.
