Ashford v Radlett CC Women & Girls on Sun 11 Jun 2006 at 14:00
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets
Match report
Radlett Rejuvenated
Radlett women's cricket team have been going through something of a bad patch! Relegated in successive seasons and not having won a match since July 2003, they have rebuilt from the bottom up. It all started last year with closer links with the excellent youngsters coming through from the successful girls teams. They now have a team that is very health blend of youth and experience - and once more, they are having a lot of fun.
This reached a new pinnacle last Sunday with victory at Ashford in Middlesex in their Southern League Division 3 match. The team had one surviving member from the last winning side, Lorett Bredenkamp, who didn't bowl on that day but who is now spearheading the attack. The team included three U13s in the 12, Louise Verroken-Jones, Helen Clifford and Piya Haria.
On a very hot afternoon, Ashford won the toss and batted first. The opening attack of Lorett Bredenkamp and Viv Clark, supported by some excellent work in the field, kept Radlett in control, Bredenkamp turning in an impressive 1 for 6 off 9 overs with 5 maidens. At the other end, Viv Clark only conceded 28 runs from her 10 overs and taking 2 wickets. The arrival of New Zealander K Butcher at the crease in the Ashford middle order changed matters and she was to make a swift 52 off the now tiring Radlett bowlers enabling Ashford to set a target of 166 for 6 off their 40 overs. Michele Verroken chipped in with 1 for 52 from her 10 overs and the highlights in the field were a superb catch taken by captain and wicket-keeper Hannah Macey and an opportunistic run out which galvanised the team when Ashford were starting to get a grip on the game.
Radlett made a solid start to their innings but were then to lose Cath McNeill (17) and Lorett Bredenkamp in quick succession. This brought Viv Clark to the wicket and she and opener Hannah Macey consolidated the innings taking Radlett to the brink of a memorable victory. However, Ashford struck back with two wickets. First Viv Clark (47) was deprived of what would have been a well deserved half century and she was followed back to the pavilion almost immediately by Abi Naugher. Katie Coppiters joined Macey at the wicket and the two of them saw Radlett to victory, Hannah Macey finishing on a magnificent 72 not out.
Radlett Women's next league match is at home against The Mote Ladies on Sunday 25 June. New members are always welcome - contact the club via the website www.radlettcc.com or come and join us at training on a Thursday evening at Cobden Hill, Radlett.
