Radlett CC 2nd XI v Totteridge on Sat 09 Sep 2006 at 12:30

Match report
It took Radlett II just three overs to secure the point they needed to guarantee becoming Division 3 champions, as two Totteridge batsman found themselves at the same end discussing a second run, with Neil Ledermann’s throw safely on its way to the keeper.
With Ledermann (7-2-16-0), Heath Paynter and Oz Edwards all bowling tight opening spells and restricting Totteridge to just two runs an over for the first 20 overs, it looked as though Radlett might add to their total of 11 wins this season. However, as so often this year, Radlett let their opponents off the hook with poor fielding and allowed an aggressive middle and lower order to post a challenging total. Indeed, such was the effectiveness of the Totteridge counter-attack that they added 200 runs in just 32 overs, before being dismissed for 247. Paynter’s 4 wickets secured his position as the team’s leading wicket-taker, well supported by Oz Edwards with three victims.
Radlett had chased similar totals several times before, but with a weakened batting line-up it would need a solid performance by the top five to secure the points. Moreover, Totteridge, having achieved maximum batting points, now only needed four bowling points to secure promotion themselves and were in combative mood. A wicket with the first ball of the innings set them on their way and within a further 20 overs the Radlett innings was in tatters at 36-5.
The pugnacious Heath Paynter offered brief hope of revival, but departed after a quick-fire 17, caught going for another big hit. Hopes were further raised when Jim Chaudry, batting solidly at no 4 and well supported by young Shamit Nathwani, stroked four 4s in an over. However, when he ran out his partner and then succumbed himself for a fine 57, Radlett were staring their first defeat of the season in the face.
Time for skipper Amjad Khan and the evergreen Tony Johnson to show their experience. Both batted solidly in a tense situation, with Johnson scoring a classy 27 not out as the pair played out the remaining 10 overs against a wide mix of bowling.
So Radlett end the season as the only undefeated team in the Division, finishing 13 points clear at the top, with 11 wins and 6 draws. A great season, with contributions from all players, from ages 14 to 57!
