Welwyn Garden City v Radlett CC Academy on Sun 30 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Radlett CC Won 2 runs
Match report
On a bright and sunny Sunday morning (!) with occasional cumulus nimbus clouds splattered throughout the sky. With a distinct southerly wind driving us on to Welwyn Garden City in a Volvo G reg with speeds of 0-60 in ten minutes. As manager Bernie scented victory in the air, he made the most of his power steering as he crashed into a curb, rupturing his hubcap (morning!)
As we arrived at the picturesque Welwyn Garden City ground with a good looking pitch we were greeted by the words “you’re playing down the road”, thus we hurled ourselves back into the car and made our way down the road to the ground adjacent to the international English Association bowls tournament. In the 1st round, Eric got closest to the white, closely followed by Pringle, to take the spoils of the opening exchanges in a riveting encounter.
Back to the cricket (morning!). Skipper for the day Mark Silva, aka Dave Gold, used his experience, epitomised by his receding hairline, to great effect as he won the toss with a sharp heads call, and elected to bat on a dry wicket with a hint of green. Openers Matt Soffair and Hasit Mehta strolled to the crease with a hint of arrogance in their strokeplay, evident as Hasit lost his off ‘peg’ to a ball from the rapid opening bowler off four paces. Enter Tej Malde, surely an India hopeful after his quickfire 28 from 30 overs (sarcasm!) on a serious note Tej enthralled all 3 spectators with his audacious strokeplay consiting of a high elbow and low backlift (his DVD, ‘more blocks than legoland’ is available from all local superstores on Monday). Meanwhile, Matt Soffair was compiling as innings of 62, comprising of many an elegant slog over cow corner. At drinks Mark Silva commented that 240 was par, despite the current rate of 3 an over, greeted by the team’s comments of “you’re taking the biscuit Goldy!”. Soon after some rash strokeplay accounted for Matt and Neel (KP wannabe) Malde. Enter skipper Silva, aka 3rd XI superstar, who imperiously took over the scene with his quickfire 47 consiting of four 6s, three off which were toed… morning! Then came Luca Guerrini, having recently been released from the young offenders institution after his second ASBO, he unselfishly hit 18 as Radlett finished on 199, with good contributions down the order.
Radlett entered the field approximately half an hour later, on rather empty stomachs due to a rather mediocre tea, however Matt, Luca and Dave ensured there were no leftovers as they generously took a blow for the team and dismantled the cupcakes in an orderly fashion. However, the after effects of those cupcakes were evident as Matt failed to bend down and therefore let a single go between his legs… morning Matty! Fast forward to the 40th over, previously Ollie Jackson, Hemel Malde and Lloyd Patternot had bowled excellent spells of pace bowling and Sahil Shah had redefined the long barrier technique as he kneed the ball for four (morning!). At the death Neel Malde bowled exceptionally well with figures of 3-12 off 5 overs as Radlett were victorious by 2 runs.
We cruised home in 2nd gear with a top speed of 39mph in a definite light-hearted manner. Finally we re-entered Radlett to rapturous applause and were greeted by a delightful Ford Mustang, who apparently appeared to wink at Mark (before the drinks) and as for after the drink, well, you don’t want to know (morning!).
Written by Mark Silva, Matt Soffair and Luca Guerrini. We’re ever so sorry.
