Radlett CC Academy v Stevenage on Sun 02 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Radlett CC Won 125 runs
Match report
My wife is staying with her mother in South Wales this weekend, so I thought I would play a game on the Sunday, because I can do what I want, get a bit of batting practice and then have a drink with the lads, free of any responsibility or repercussions. Thus I agreed when they asked me to captain the Academy side. What could be better, open the batting, have a bowl if I felt like it, and bully a few kids. Deep Joy.
But no. All the rules! And it seemed that I had to be nice to these children I'd never met and let them bat and bowl to their heart's
content. The boot appeared to be on the other foot, not what I had planned.
Yet the experience was marvellous. I didn't bat, and bowled just two overs, but had the privilege of captaining a side of richly talented young men, from whom I learned more than they got from me.
We won the toss and batted in the heat. We batted superbly, in our 40 overs amassing 275 for 3, with two players retiring. I haven't got the scorebook, and won't mention any names, because I only met them this afternoon, and they know who they are. For the recognition thing, which _is_ important, there will be a scorecard broadcast.
The valid point being that the batters played sensibly and unselfishly, posting a tough target.
We bowled and fielded extremely well, were a class above Stevenage, and knew it. The atmosphere in the field was positive, chirpy and confident.
The win was by over 100 runs, a thrashing. What impressed me was that this team of youngsters were not prepared to give any quarter, and played with confidence and a high degree of technical aptitude.
I will apologise for not mentioning any names, for in any game of cricket there are people who stand out by virtue of their performance. Cricket is a team game, which we often forget. But I won't forget in a hurry what I have learned from a side of kids who, if they play for Radlett for a few years more will enrich the Club's, not just cricketing resources, but the pool of characters.
