Winchmore Hill v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sun 28 May 2006 at 13:00
Radlett CC Won 3 wickets

Match report Radlett travelled to old adversaries Winchmore Hill in the ECB Cockspur Cup Round 3 clash staged last Sunday, and the two teams produced another marvellous game of limited overs cricket which ebbed and flowed throughout before culminating in a tension packed finish.

Following a delayed start of some 45 minutes due to heavy overnight rain, Radlett captain Dan Chippeck called correctly at the toss and had no hesitation in asking Winchmore Hill to bat first, and his opening bowlers Stuart Browne and Graham Dill were quick to vindicate that decision by claiming wickets in their opening overs, Browne dismissing pinch hitter Howorth for a duck and Dill seeing off Middlesex starlet Shaun Levy for 5 both to catches by skipper Chippeck. Winchmore Hill skipper Andy Varley and Matt Bowen set about the task of rebuilding the innings digging in and seeing off the new ball, and they successfully saw off Browne's exemplary spell of 1-17 off his 9 over allocation. However, Bowen soon fell to the left arm seam of Haydn Smith, and thereafter Radletts attack kept a vice like grip on the scoring rate. Varley batted superbly to anchor the Winchmore Hill innings with a real captains innings, a patient 57, but only Danny Kerry with an enterprising 30 not out was able to give any support, as David Hegarty (2-25) and Simon Jackson (1-30) turned in accurate spells, Winchmore Hill completing their 45 over allocation on a competitive total of 161-6.

In reply, Radlett's left hand opening pair Fielden and Smith found the going tough against seasoned campaigner Frank Griffith and both fell cheaply. Youngster Mitz Choksi, thrown into the cauldron at number 3, settled nicely and unleashed some superb drives before playing on to off spinner Barker for 26 at which stage Radlett still required 94 off 23 overs. Chippeck joined Matt Evans at the crease and between them slowly managed to wrestle control from the Winchmore Hill spin attack. However, both fell in quick succession for 25 and 27 respectively, and 50 was still required from the final 12 overs. Brenden Hutchings managed a couple of lusty blows before falling to the final ball of Barker's outstanding spell for 17, but Graham Dill and veteran keeper Colin Warne combined for a crucial partnership taking Radlett to the brink of victory, both smiting big sixes at vital times. Warne was run out after a mix up with 7 needed from 2 overs, and it was left to Simon Jackson to finish the chase with a flourish, a pair of twos followed by a sweetly struck lofted drive to the long on boundary, sealing a hard fought 3 wicket victory.

Radlett's reward is a home tie on June 18th in the regional semi final, when the visitors to the Brunton Memorial Ground at Cobden Hill will be another Middlesex Premier League outfit, Brondesbury.
