Radlett CC 5th XI v Botany Bay III on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 2 wickets

Match report Depleted, but strong, Radlett V faced an undefeated Botany Bay side, who had yet to be bowled out this season. The challenge had been issued!

We turned up at Queens with the illustrious captain injured; having dropped a portion of hamburger and chips on the club house floor, he pulled a hamstring in the process of retrieval. We are assured that, nights spent sleeping in an oxygen chamber, combined with sessions with a top quality physio, will mean that the legend, Vikram, will be on the teamsheet again in the near future!

We played the game at Queens, although a cut area of Philimore Rec may have been more suitable. The wicket was truly awful.

Radlett won the toss and elected to field, in the belief that we could chase whatever total the opposition set. Our main concern was bowling the Botany Bay side out, since they had not been dismissed all season. We started well enough, with the pitch playing up and some changeable bowling from the opening pair of Lederman and Williams, the Botany Bay openers were unable to get any rhythm. The first wicket fell at 22 after 9 overs, by which time the pattern for the innings had been set; one ball per over was spitting up off a length which made it difficult for the batsmen. The Botany Bay team batted with patience, if not ambition and never set a pace above 3 per over.

Mike Williams settled down after an inconsistent start and was rewarded with a wicket with his final delivery. Neil Lederman bowled good lines all afternoon and even a nosebleed between spells did not upset him, turning out figures of 3 for 30. Tim “the ultimate competitor” Roslin bowled consistently, with varied pace, good lines and with the help of an increasingly difficult wicket, took 4 for 40 from 19 overs. Shabbir Foyez bowled tidily to take 1 for 12 from his 7 overs. Peter Warne will want to forget his single over which released the strangle hold of 53 for 3 after 25 overs. Matt Barrett joined the attack after 2 hours with only 30 overs on the board and Radlett needing to up the over rate.

16 overs later the score had moved on 50 runs with the loss of only 2 more wickets , but Botany Bay were languishing on 118 for 5 from 43 overs. With 10m left to bowl Neil Lederman rejoined the attack. The last 10 overs went for only 32 with 5 wickets falling. In appraisal, the Radlett side should be disappointed to have let the opposition get to 150; there were several chances to take catches which were missed and the fielding was not as good as it could have been. The bowlers persevered and despite having help from a difficult wicket found wickets hard to come by.

At Tea, Vikram was more concerned with anyone getting juice on his scorebook than the target, but he was not to know the gripping tale of the chase!

With a chase of 3 per over we fancied our chances. Things looked even better when the first two ball of the innings were dispatched to the boundary by Matt Barrett with two well struck off drives. Chris Griffiths, promoted to opener since he had to work at 6pm, duely took his leave first ball of the second over. Things did not look so great, and they got worse as the top order gave their wickets away playing too ambitiously on an unforgiving wicket.

49 for 2 after 8 overs, became 82 for 7 after 23. However this brought Eddie “Eagle” Saunders and Peter “Bear” Warne to the wicket. At the drinks break Radlett took stock of the situation and the batting after thereafter was sensible and effective. The pair moved the score on to 131 in the next 14 overs, playing judicious strokes and finding the gaps to keep the scoreboard ticking over. There was a close run out incident, where Warne hesitated on the wicket, but just made his ground, obscured by square leg. Finally Warne was given LBW, after the opening bowler had to go off and the captain finished his over, having done a fine job getting the side close to the winning post.

Neil Lederman came in at 10 to support Eddie Saunders. He looked nervous facing wicket to wicket deliveries and narrowly fending off a barrage of tight deliveries. Then, with 16 required off 7 overs, without fuss, he took two steps down the wicket and neatly smashed the bowler back over his head for 6. 10 required from 6 overs. Eddie took control with 2 fours to finish the innings.

Radlett had dug deep to secure a battling 30 points, which had looked unlikely with three quarters of the match gone. Credit goes to the bowlers, who worked hard to keep the target achievable and to the tail of Warne, Saunders and Lederman, who batted with their heads and took the team to a marvelous victory.
