Hemel Hempstead V v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 01 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 9 wickets
Match report
The clash this week took the steely Radlett team to the Rudolph Steiner school to play lower mid table Hemel Hempstead. Radlett lost the toss and were stuck in the field on a hot day. Vikram had a modest opening spell but mainly Michael Williams and Shabbir took over with Michael taking an early scalp. The more experienced opener was in charge of the Hemel innings but seemed to have only one shot the square cut. There were enough dropped catches which were tough but realistic and would have cut down the run feast by a fair amount. Shabbir was the pick of the bowlers with 7 maidens and taking 3 wickets. John Mansell bowled below his usual self but that was his first match back. Tim Roslin continued where he left off last week with some spinning balls but not much rip. Chances at short leg, a stumping and a catch were missed to let the opener get away with a ton soon after to be dismissed by a mistimed hook. Saleem who hadn’t played for 8 years took an incredible clean bowled wicket with his first ball. His run up long and quite a tearaway back in his day showed the quickest pace on the day. Matt Soffair offered the 2nd spin option which was varied and harder to play for the batsman. Radlett could have saved at least 20-30 runs in the field and about 4-5 catches taken would have left them with a less gruesome task. Hemel closed up on 204 using up 53 overs on a pitch that suited batting.
Radlett opened up with Vikram and Matt Soffair with the bowling a combination of medium pace and spin. Vikram settled in took a few shots and played some drives but missed the line to be bowled for 17 when he was looking dangerous. Matt was flamboyount and youthful and the bowling just was not a challenge for him early on he hit some blows to the surprise of the opposition. The wicket fall now brought the talented Vishal Patel to the crease that would bring about a legendary partnership in 5th XI cricket. Vishal drove ferociously square, cover and off were seeing big gaps with the strokes played. His batting took over the bowling completely and was at ease at the crease with Matt accelerating too to reach his 50 and Vishal following shortly with his half ton. The partnership saw new heights and must be the highest in 5th’s cricket. Vishal managed to lose the new ball after the 1st over it was taken and hit 14 4’s and a six for his 76 and Matt 12 4’s and a six to hit 75. Both were pleasing to watch and played excellently to put on 163 unbeaten for the 2nd wicket. Man of the match Vishal Patel for playing an effortless innings of domination and quality outright. Radlett had a thumping victory in 29 overs which leaves them blazing at top of the table 3rd week running. All credit to the strong batting determination of the youth.
