Radlett CC 5th XI v Old Owens III on Sat 24 Jun 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 10 wickets
Match report
This week’s match returned to the baked landscape of Queens school hosting the near bottom of the table Old Owens side. Vikram won the toss electing to field on what looked like a batting paradise. A prompt start with opening pair Vikram and Michael really bowled tightly. Michael took a wicket with his fourth ball to start off superbly. The pitch was doing all sorts skidding; shooting, bumping and seaming balls saw the batsmen check their technique. Vikram in his 3rd over ripped through the left handers defence to clean bowl him and proceeded in the next over to uproot the other opener’s leg stump with a menacing line bowl which was close to a perfect inswinging yorker. 5 overs bowled Vikram allowed only 2 scoring shots and 22 consecutive dot balls. Michael had a good opening spell including a couple of bouncers. Neil Lederman in his outing with the 5’s bowled extremely good lines and was mostly unplayable. Keerthi too showed his continued run of form with good bounce, swing and seam. He removed their no. 4 who took an awful long time to get ready at the crease very unorthodox mannerisms to the humour of the fielding side. The first 5 batsman could not only play clean and proper strokes but could not get the ball off the square either. Their captain restored some pride to the innings and hit some runs and boundaries too. Tim Roslin after 2 seasons away found great form with his spin bowling to join the party. He took a wicket with his 3rd ball when Vikram at 1st slip scooped up an extremely low catch. Also a caught and bowled helped the cause. By this time Old Owens were in a big muddle and Tim had finished with 4 wickets. Alexander Asher got more of the tricky fielding and a few half chances were missed by him but did give a good performance throughout. After 38 overs 123 runs were all that Old Owens could muster.
Radlett were now in the driving seat with a minefield of a pitch the batting line up was strong. Simon Randall and Tony Peck opened the innings. Tony smacked the first ball for 4 and this was the tone of the chase. Tony took early command and then Simon followed and stepped up the steam. After 10 overs at 39 the pair accelerated rocket-like next 9 overs brought 85 runs with the 14th and 15th overs bringing 17 and 18 runs. Simon finished on 69 not out with 12 4’s and 2 6’s. Simon hit some massive blows for the 6’s and clean drives and cuts on the ground. This was an excellent run chase which pushed the team morale to new heights. Old Owens were both dismayed and probably relieved as they had met more than their match.
This leaves Radlett still top of the table with plenty to play for. Further good team performances should see Radlett win many more games.
Man of the match Simon Randall.
