Knebworth Park VI v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 03 Jun 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 8 wickets

Match report Finally the rains calmed and cricket was played this week. The match was played at Hitchin which had a lovely scenic backdrop. The pitch was true and fairly well kept with a quickish outfield. Vikram won the toss and elected to field which would prove to be the correct decision.

Knebworth Park are a promoted team and would definitely be new to Division 12 teams whereas we have a few seasons experience. Opening bowling pair of Vikram and Phil Simmons was superior to the batting display. Vikram found his line and varied the length cleverly to hinder the runs. Phil showed prodigious pace, some bounce and swing to really stun the batsman. Luca took a stunning high diving catch at gully to dismiss their captain off Phil’s first ball. This continued with a few more wickets by Phil which surprised Knebworth as this youngster was showing his class. Toby returned to bowl after injury which was steady and accurate and he started contributing to the Knebworth collapse in his 3rd over with 2 wickets. At 37 for 8 after 15 overs the opposition were on the back foot and needed a serious effort to recover which happened with the last pair making 36. Niranka made his debut for Radlett with off spin bowling and showed what he could do by restricting the batsman. He bowled tightly and this allowed enough variation to overcome whatever the batsman threw at us which amounted to very little. Knebworth completely folded at 84 for 10 with late resistance of a stubborn partnership to save their blushes.

Radlett opened the batting with run getter Simon Randall and the capable Mark Turpin. The opening bowling pair was really not of the standard and one of them delivered 8 no balls to dent their hopes of curtailing Radlett. Simon unleashed his square and late cuts and swift running of the wickets steadied the run rate. Mark got out to a soft delivery and in came the strokemaker Nick Robinson who slowly found his touch and showed the panache to add runs with Simon with a plus 50 partnership this built the platform for Radletts win. Sensible batting by Simon and his unbeaten 39 was of a superior standing to the oppositions offering and there was plenty of batting to come if Knebworth infiltrated our defences. Their fielding was ok but they had made too few runs on a wicket that had at least 150 runs or so for any appropriate target.

Phil Simmons was the strength to the bowling and he was man of the match with 5 wickets for 16 runs who showed a lot of promise for a young cricketer. We fielded really well and so far have not dropped any catches which shows the quality even at this level. Radlett with 2 wins from 2 played could not ask for a better start to their division 12 campaign.
