Parkfield & Headstone v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 29 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 77 runs
Match report
Radlett IV kept up their Division Six promotion challenge with a 77-run win over fellow contenders Parkfield on an over-dry pitch at Hatch End. The ball popped and shot all afternoon, with Radlett’s 138 all out proving to be more than enough. This second successive win took Radlett up to sixth place.
Jamie Wells decided to bat, knowing that previous results on this ground favoured the team putting runs on the board first. At 81 for seven the total looked like being too low for comfort, but Radlett’s depth in batting probably settled the match. James Eyre – his 25 was the top score of the day -- Prabhu Arumugam, in his first match back after medical exams, and Luca Guerrini all batted exceptionally well in the conditions.
With a competitive total to defend, Radlett’s opening attack soon had Parkfield struggling, with Eyre and Chandana Meepagama finding a steady length, allowing the pitch to undermine the batting.
Eyre soon decided that ‘fast’ was useless and switched to ‘dobbers’ off three or four paces, giving his team-mates a glimpse at what Australia would have in store as support bowling for Brett Lee in next winter’s Ashes.
The quest for victory became a question of holding the next catch off the next popping delivery. Meepagama removed the two openers, Parkfield’s best batsmen – one caught behind cutting and the other plumb lbw. A few chances went down, but Nick Tune, with a fine running effort to hold a sliced skier at extra cover, Arumugam and Wells held on to good catches.
Matt Soffair, from the under-15 side, made an awkward catch at wide mid-on look easy and he excelled in the field on his debut. Even old iron hands himself, Meepagama, made a catch stick at mid-off. Eyre weighed in with a run-out as Parkfield folded to headlong collapse. Whatever they tried did not work.
This was an impressive, resourceful showing from a side full of confidence, well led by stand-in captain Wells. If players continue to make themselves available, Radlett have a strong chance of promotion.
