Little B Sahibs v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 15 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 7 wickets

Match report Radlett IV defeated Little Berkhamsted Sahibs by seven wickets with more than 33 overs to spare to jump into the fourth Division Six promotion slot.
With a blank Saturday next weekend after the withdrawal of UCA from the league, Radlett are likely to drop a few places, but they showed at Little Berhamsted they had the confidence to maintain the pressure on the leading clubs. Lowly Sahibs were weak, but they had a history of defeating various Radlett teams during the village’s yo-yo times in Division Five and Six.
Radlett were asked to field and it was clear that the Sahib score was unlikely to be high when the new ball went through the top of an ultra-dry pitch several times. With more luck Chris Brown could have had a hatful of wickets in his opening spell rather than one – when he broke the middle stump of the No 3 batsman. His new-ball partner Ross Carpenter produced some fine deliveries and picked up two wickets, helped by a slick catch from Mark Gray, a ‘natural’ in the gully position.
A good gully has to gauge the best fielding position depending on the pace of the bowler, the character of the pitch and the style of batting. He must not field not too deep (as most do) or too close, not too square or fine. Neither is it a static job, as he must be willing to deter singles in front of the crease. A good day in the gully, as ‘Bones’ undoubtedly had, can lift a team.
Matt Bell gave Gray an early chance to make an impression with his leg-spin, and his variations of length and direction seemed to mesmerise the batsmen. Four wickets fell to him, including a return catch. The support bowling was less effective, and Brown was called up to whip out more wickets just as the score was looking dangerously high.
A total of 135 might have posed a stressful target if the Sahibs could settle to a steady length, but they failed against a side always willing to hit the loose ball. Radlett scooted along at five runs an over after Bell had cover-driven the first ball of the innings for four. Richard Hardy, in particular, looked in confident form as he continued his golden run-scoring summer with a six and barrage of fours. As long as the batsmen avoided the occasional spiteful delivery, the boundaries were there for the taking.
This was a surprisingly easy but welcome victory
