Match report Richard Hardy blasted a spectacular undefeated 134 at Hitchin II, but his career-best league score was still not enough to force a Division Six win for Radlett IV.

Though the 15-run defeat after such a long run chase was a good effort, Matt Bell’s side were left without a league win – if still in with a chance of pushing for promotion.

Hitchin won the toss, and Radlett were unable to contain their batsmen on a featherbed pitch in the heat. A good 50-overs declaration at 243-4 threw down a challenge and set up a great game of cricket.

Radlett’s top order embarrassed themselves with cheap dismissals, with only James Eyre staying long, but the scoring rate remained brisk and Hardy quickly started hitting boundaries, using his trademark extra-cover drive.

Hardy finished with Radlett IV’s highest-ever individual league score, hitting 20 fours and a five from an overthrow. Radlett had slipped to 30-3, but Hardy received good support from ‘Meeps’ Meepagama, adding on 46 for the seventh wicket. Radlett were still only 148-7 when Mark Gray came in to shore up an end, putting on 48 for the eighth wicket.

Hardy gave only one chance, from a swirling miscued drive before his fifty, and continued to treat the Hitchin bowling with contempt. Unfortunately the innings ended with Hardy’s miscalculated two that gave Neil Lederman no chance. With more than five overs remaining, there was a chance for an extraordinary win against the odds.

Radlett’s bowling this season has been off-form and unusually erratic. If this can be fixed, a move up the table seems inevitable.
