Chorleywood II v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 01 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 47 runs
Match report
Radlett made heavy weather of winning this match against a young and inexperienced Chorleywood side. The culprit again was some brittle middle order batting, moving from a situation of total dominance at 106 for 1 at nearly five an over to 136 for 6 ten overs later.
It was some excellent bowling and competent fielding that got the team out of jail, with the redoubtable Ollie Robertson taking 5 for 40 from 17 probing overs. He was supported well by Dümmer, who took three wickets, and Chris Brown. But it was the spin bowling of Ashley Tillett, in harness with Mark Silva, that turned the game back in Radlett's favour, for the seamers to come back and apply the denouement.
Radlett won the toss and decided to bat on this the hottest day of the summer so far. Tillett was not as fluent as of late, but it was still a surprise when he spooned a catch with the score at 41. Nick Ingram then joined his brother Dom at the crease and thereafter they did much as they liked on a decent wicket and quick outfield. At 100 for 1 scoring at five runs an over, the only problem seemed when to declare, as a score in excess of 250 seemed likely. This was not to reckon with this sides' predisposition to throw away a promising start with irresponsible batting. The one batsman who has an excuse was Iain Edwards, whose lbw
decision would seem to mean “lunchbox before wicket” so high did it hit him. Edwards is a key player, who has the technique and temperament to build his own and his side's innings, thus his demise took on a greater significance.
After 106 for 1 there followed one lbw and six feeble swats to grateful fielders, and the innings subsided to a miserable 188 all out. On this wicket 240 is par, and against this opposition 45 overs should be the rate.
Robertson and Dümmer opened the bowling, and met with immediate success, reducing the home side to 18 for 3 after the first 7 overs, the next pair of bats settled down with increasing confidence, and started to realise that on this wicket 189 was very gettable. The score rose to 40, and when Chris Brown had no luck, Dom Ingram brought on the leg-break bowlers Silva and Tillet. Silva bowled tidily, but after Tillett's first over it was difficult to know if he was spinning the ball because none of his deliveries had actually made contact with the wicket. His subsequent overs however, were marvellously threatening, culminating with a ball that bowled Chorleywood's danger batsman around his legs. The score was now 87 for 4.
This turned the game back towards Radlett, and Dümmer and Robertson came back on to bowl and mop up the remaining batsmen with some panache.
Radlett's fielding was again out of the top drawer, with two excellent slip catches by Yogendra, who strained an intercostal rib muscle from laughing too hard at Tillett's first over, and another two from the excellent Teddy Edwards. Brown, Dümmer and Robertson were also electric in the field, and it is safe to say that Radlett have been the better fielders in every game this season.
Playing his first game for Radlett 3rd was 15 year old Luca Guerrini. He kept wicket immaculately, and it is a testament to Andy Gray and his helpers in the Colts section who have brought through players of this calibre. Luca oozes natural ability and just looks at home behind the wicket. When one considers that he is used to twenty over games and not 53 over games, he did remarkably well, and it is not difficult to see him moving to higher teams very quickly.
So Radlett won by 47 runs with ten overs remaining. A welcome win yes, but there is a mountain to climb if promotion this season is to become likely.
