Radlett CC 3rd XI v Cavendish on Sat 24 Jun 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Lost 20 runs
Match report
Despite the appearance of being a good game, which it was, there was precious little satisfaction for this Radlett 3^rd XI side, which was as strong a side as could be hoped for.
Last season the 3rd XI won its first match with three ex-players who had been dragged out of the pub and hadn't played for years. This powerful team underperformed badly, let down by their top six batters who never looked like getting the runs.
Radlett won the toss on a hot day, and, knowing the opposition could bat, took the aggressive option of putting the other side in, choosing to rely on limiting the runs and chasing a total.
At 65 for 3 it looked a good option, but with good batting and a little luck, the Cavendish score stood at 175 for 3 with 20 overs to go. A score of 300 plus looked a certainty, but Radlett's spinners, Rob Crocker and Mark (Dave) Silva put the brake on, and with the help of some good catching, and brilliant fielding from especially Josh Rose, Brian Dümmer and Ollie Robertson, took the remaining seven wickets to limit Cavendish to 259 all out in the last over.
The wicket was a batsman's paradise, and Radlett, with such strength in depth were surely favourites, even for such an apparently big score. But Cavendish felt they were 20 runs short of a winning total, which I felt was right.
After 14 overs Radlett were on course at 70 for no wicket, and looking well set. Nine overs later they were 115 for 6, and the game was effectively over. Playing champagne shots looks pretty, but Radlett needed one batsman to stick in and get a big score. So although they were always up with the scoring rate, not one batsman took the responsibility, and not one fifty was made.
Radlett made 230 in the end, their blushes being spared by Robertson and Rob Crocker, who took the score from 115 to 200. But this was papering over the cracks of poor batting, and on this wicket 230 is not a good score for such a strong side.
There will have to be some backbone in the batting if this team is to challenge for promotion this season.
