Northampton Exiles v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 17 Jun 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Lost 3 wickets
Match report
This whole hearted and eventful game ended in defeat for Radlett by 3 wickets away to a good Northampton Exiles team.
Smithers won the toss and batted on a hot day with a decent wicket. The Radlett batting was disappointing apart from a sparkling 58 from Paul Windmill, bristling with aggression and natural talent, and including two sixes. Nick Tune looked classy for 21 and Teddy Edwards was completely solid until he was run out by a direct hit. Edwards is the grist to a big total, the pillar around which a big innings can be built, so to lose him was crucial.
The next crucial moment came when skipper Tim Smithers went down in mid pitch like a bag of John Innes Number 2 when attempting a single. He now has serious hamstring/sciatic nerve problem. So not only did we lose our captain when for the first time this season he had got a proper bat and was really staring to dominate, but we were down to ten men for the rest of the game, and may not have his charismatic presence back for weeks or months.
Ollie Robertson batted spiritedly at the end with Tony Johnson to reach 182 for 8 after 53 overs. This was barely par, but not, as it turned out, match-winning.
Radlett bowled skillfully and fielded ferociously, Teddy Edwards in particular accepting two awkward catches. But with ten men it wasn't quite enough. Josh Rose Brian Dûmmer and Ollie Robertson all bowled their hearts out, but Northampton Exiles ran out winners by three wickets with three deliveries to spare. This would indicate that had we scored just another twenty runs we probably would have won.
The fielding was excellent all round, with Tony Johnson again a model of competence behind the wicket, giving confidence to the other fieders.
Mark Silva, still a teenager, played his first league game for Radlett, and did enough to suggest that he will be a great asset to the playing strength.
This was a defeat, but if anything a heartening performance for which every member of the side can be proud of his contribution.
