St. Margaretsbury v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 03 Jun 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Lost 6 wickets
Match report
Radlett lost this match quite comfortably, without playing badly, and, as sometimes happens, more than once against this team, with just one player making the difference.
St. Marge's are a very welcoming side, and the day was sunny, after all the rain of previous weeks. We won the toss and batted, expecting (erroneously) the wicket to get slower during the day. We batted (badly) but made 186 all out in the last (53^rd over).
The batting had breadth rather than depth, but high spots were Paul Windmill's electric 35, mostly in boundaries, and Dom Ingram top scoring with 48, and looking again the batter around whom a substantial total might be built. Tony Johnson crafted a thoughtful 31 when it was most needed, getting run out, and Ceri Luffman, our Celtic keeper, showed he could bat, making 24 not out at number 10.
186 was not enough, and we could point to a couple of poor leg befores being gifted to the oppo, with Ian Sudbury's ridiculous, and Dom Ingram's being unlikely. On the other hand, St.Marge's took a couple of excellent catches to back up some unpenetrative bowling. The rest was frankly not great batting.
We felt that 186 could be a decent score. We opened with the old ball with Ian Sudbery and Mark Gray, who bowled well enough to remove the openers who advanced the score to 62 for 2, but it was their number 3 Pedman who was a class above the rest, and took the game away from us. He was well supported by Anthony, but Pedman was there at the end, seeing his side through to a six wicket win.
Ostensibly stuffed by 6 wickets, but in reality we didn't bat well enough and the difference was one player. The side bowled well, none better than Ollie Robertson who bowled his heart out for no wickets, luck or justice. Sudbery, Mark Gray and Brian Dummer all bowled well, but got no breaks, and the wicket just got easier.
The fielding was good, with Luffman's prosthetic hamstrings noisy but holding up well, and as is his way, dictating the standard admirably. Having a proper keeper makes such a difference.
It's also a luxury to take with us an umpire who not only has good sense, humour, and eyesight, but who has also played the game at top club level. For that we owe Geoff Bird a great vote of thanks, and hope he can help us out frequently in the future.
Disappointing, but this time last year we were bottom of the table. There is enough talent and leadership in this side to improve on last season and move up a league.
