Chorleywood v Radlett CC U9A on Wed 24 May 2006 at 6pm
Radlett CC Won 29 runs
Match report
A thrilling win in appalling conditions. Radlett batted first and accumulated sensibly. Adam struck 7 including another fine boundary, but 4 wickets went down to leave the boys on 205 after 8 overs. Ben, a late replacement and Sam steadied the ship before Abdullah abd Banuj smashed 30 off the last 4 overs to leave a highly defendable total of 245.
The weather was poor and the rain which had started to come down heavily towards the end of the Radlett innings didn't relent. However, both sides wanted to play cricket and we played on.Given the soaking wet ball and outfield Radlett performed heroics in the field.Chorleywood's first pair put on 17 before making way for probably their best 2 batsmen.Jonathan, on debut fired in a low leg side full toss and their batsmen wnet for it with Pietersonesque power.Your correspondent at square leg was about to dive for cover when Abdullah sprang to his left to snaffle a brilliant catch.Next over William brilliantly ran out the same player with a direct hit.Two down-and that's the way it stayed for the next 8 overs.
Chorleywood looked set to win at 240-2 after 14 overs.Cool heads were needed. Banuj delivered by bowling on e of the batsmen.2 balls later William performed another of his party pieces throwing down the stumps. At 227-4 Chorleywood still had a chance but Ben slipped in a leg break and bowled one batsman who was then run out by another direct hit by Abdullah next ball.
In the end the margin of victory was comfortable but this was a very close game against a good team. There is a lot of raw talent in the Radlett side and skill under pressure came through tonight.Well done to the boys who bowled the crucial last 4 overs, Jonathan,Banuj,Abdullah and Ben.Men of the match,Abdullah and William for brilliant fielding in diabolical wet conditions.
