Radlett CC 2nd XI v Dunstable II on Sat 15 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets
Match report
A scintillating 113 off 106 balls by Muhammad Akoojee formed the backbone of Radlett II’s impressively easy chase of a target of 264 set by Dunstable II.
Dunstable had chosen to make first use of a superb batting track, where the short boundary to one side and a fast outfield made a high-scoring match likely. However, excellent bowling by Radlett’s opening pair Simon Jackson and Heath Paynter kept things tight early on and after 13 overs Dunstable were two wickets down with just 30 on the board, courtesy of a superb piece of fielding by Jim Lewis, who swooped in from point to throw out the middle stump, and a fine delivery from Jackson.
A third wicket partnership of 106 in 20 overs repaired the early damage, but left-arm pace bowler Jim Lewis got in on the action again when, after suffering early punishment, he ripped through the middle order with four wickets in three overs, to leave Dunstable on 152-6 with 15 overs left.
No 3 batsman Chris Stearn, fresh from the recent Varsity match, was still at the crease, however, and continued to bat with aplomb, taking control of a 7th wicket partnership that added 79 and an 8th wicket partnership that took the score to 263-7. Stearn reached his patient century in the final over.
Radlett were confident that they had the batting to reach the target, not least as they were fielding a team with no natural number eleven! 20 runs were already on the board in the 4th over when Nick Hampton edged to slip, then Lewis joined Akoojee in a partnership of 138 in just twenty overs, before Lewis was bowled for 37. Simon Gray was clean bowled for 5 just three overs later, but the score had already moved on to 171 as Akoojee continued his assault. The next three overs saw Akoojee move serenely past his 100 and take the score to 207, before he was finally bowled after stroking eighteen 4s and three 6s.
Partner Jim Chaudry (40*) had himself only been dealing in fours and the scoring rate proved infectious as the normally sedate Dave Robinson (33*) immediately joined in the fun, the pair scoring at six-an-over to see the team across the finishing line with eight overs still to go. In total, four 6s and forty-three 4s had been hit in an impressive display of firepower. The win keeps Radlett in second place in Divison 3, just two points behind leaders Cockfosters and 28 points ahead of third-placed St Albans.
