Hertford II v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets
Match report
What a difference a week makes. Solid fielding and tight bowling enabled Radlett to keep Hertford under pressure throughout their innings and dismiss them for an under-par 166 in 49 overs. Four Radlett batsmen then got good starts but failed to go on, before the ever-reliable duo of Chaudry and Robinson combined in a winning partnership of 85 runs.
Second-to-bottom Hertford needed to maximise bonus points from this game and decided to bat on winning the toss. However, Radlett imposed themselves from the start, with Heath Paynter taking two wickets in his first two overs and Rob Watson bowling accurately from the other end. Nathan Jeganathan then struck in the 12th over with the score on just 28. Hertford moved on slowly at less than two an over and when Robbie Crocker removed talented youngster Ray for 26 in the 29th over, just 54 runs were on the board.
Hope remained in the form of skipper Bell, who managed to up the scoring rate on his way to a well-made 53. With runs starting to flow, Radlett skipper Amjad Khan turned to the rarely used Jim Lewis, with immediate effect. Bowling accurately at a brisk pace, Lewis induced Bell to give a smartly taken slip catch to Paynter with the score on 120 in the 40th over. Lewis, with two further victims, and the returning Paynter with a matching brace, cleaned up the innings, with only a few lusty blows by the lower order giving the score an air of respectability.
The occasion seemed an ideal opportunity to give Radlett’s under-used middle and lower order batsmen some practice and stand-in openers Colin Warne and Jim Lewis looked like they would make the most of the opportunity. However, with the score on 26, Warne (18) flicked a catch to short square leg, to be followed next over by Lewis (16), caught trying to hit his third boundary in one over.
Muhammed Akoojee and Simon Gray moved the score along to 72 in the 19th over before Akoojee unluckily played on. Only one run came from the next five overs and when Simon Gray was run out taking an ill-judged second run with the score on 84, nerves were starting to jangle in the Radlett camp.
Then came two decisive moments – a dropped slip catch with Robinson on just 1 and a change of bowling. The spinners had bowled from the off, but Hertford now decided to introduce pace at one end and immediately the pressure was relieved as erstwhile openers Chaudry and Robinson took 29 off four Cooper overs. Chaudry helped himself to a faultless 56, whilst Robinson, providing a masterclass of how to use your feet to spinners, moved smoothly to 32. Game over, with 7overs to spare.
