Hoddesdon II v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 10 Jun 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 8 wickets
Match report
Radlett II’s much vaunted batting line-up looked like facing its first major challenge of the season when Hoddesdon posted a decent-looking 254-7 in scorching conditions on a rock-hard track. However, the result never looked in doubt as Radlett kept to the necessary run rate from the off, then pressed the turbo-charger to reach the target in only the 40th over. This fine victory took Radlett to the top of Division 3 for the first time this season and sees them as the only undefeated team in the League.
Openers Chaudry and Robinson put on 113 in a quality opening partnership full of fine strokes, including one over in which Chaudry hit four sweetly-timed boundaries off his legs. The partnership was broken in the 22nd over, when Chaudry played on, but there was to be no respite for the Hoddesdon bowlers as South African star batsman Muhammad Akoojee confidently cover-drove his first ball for four. Indeed, Akoojee moved on at such a pace that within a short space of time he had passed 50 and was closing in on partner Robinson, who himself had been no slouch in taking his total into the seventies. Robbo looked set for a fine century when, on 98, he edged one to the keeper with just 22 still needed off ten overs. Only three of these were required, however, as Akoojee raced on to an impressive 94 not out off just 61 balls.
That Radlett had a decent total to chase was due entirely to a fine innings of 165 by Hoddesdon no.3 Balham. Entering the fray in the first over, after Nathan Jeganathan had pinned opener Lee lbw with a full-length in-swinging delivery, Balham held the innings together with a judicious mix of sound defence and big-hitting. He lost three further partners in taking the total to 104-4, with keeper Warne taking two catches off Paynter and Hegarty and young Ashley Tillett taking a spectacular one-handed catch high above his head as he circled under a skied on-drive. A fifth wicket partnership of 120 then ensued, during which Balham offered his only chance, as he mis-hit a sweep on 99 to find a dozing Simon Gray unable to react quickly enough on the boundary.
Leg-spinner Akoojee was introduced and immediately broke the resistance with a back-foot lbw. Two further victims were snared as Hoddesdon tried to accelerate further, including Balham who perished in the deep to a well-taken catch by Paynter. 20 runs generously donated by Gray in his two late overs set Radlett a decent target, but on a superb batting track with a small boundary on one side, the challenge proved all too easy for Radlett’s quality top order.
