Radlett CC 2nd XI v Wormley on Sat 03 Jun 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 8 wickets
Match report
Summer arrived – but unfortunately not an opposition strong enough to make the most of the weather . Visitors Wormley arrived apologising for the strength of their team, claiming they had lost eight first-team players to other clubs over the winter. It soon became obvious they weren’t lying.
With so little cricket this season, it was tempting for Radlett skipper Khan to bat on winning the toss, to make the most of the excellent weather and flat-looking pitch. However, the need for 30 points called for Wormley to be inserted, amidst groans from the batsmen in the home changing room.
Radlett opening bowlers Heath Paynter and debutant Nathan Jeganathan bowled tidily, but found nothing in the conditions to help them. In the fifth over Jeganathan induced a thin edge to the keeper, after which Wormley proceeded at a snail’s pace to take just 38 runs off the openings attack’s first 18 overs. Time to try something different, to break the stalemate.
Leg-spinner Mohammed Akoojee immediately caused problems and in his fourth over found himself on a hat-trick after making good use of his deadly quicker delivery. The hat-trick was averted but Akoojee and pace bowler Josh Rose continued to pose problems, the latter finding decent bounce off good pace.
Wormley continued to struggle to score runs and it was some relief when off-spinner Chaudry entered the fray to take 4-23 in eight overs, including that of opener Smith, whose painfully constructed innings ended on 35 off 108 balls. With Akoojee taking 3-57 in his 14 overs, wickets fell at regular intervals and Wormley were finally put out of their misery in the last over for 152. Highlight of the innings was undoubtedly Chaudry being asked to remove his cap - the batsman claiming he couldn’t see the ball – only to be asked to replace it once the alternative of a shining pate was revealed.
Opening batsmen Chaudry and Robinson set about their task with gusto, scoring at five an over. With Chaudry timing the ball well of his legs, Radlett were well on the way to the victory target when he fell lbw for 36. Robinson looked set for a serene not out score, when he edged one to the keeper on 45, but Akoojee (44*) had been going well at the other end and Simon Gray (17*)made sure there was no embarrassment, with four classy boundaries to bring victory in just 28 overs.
