Match report Matt Bell’s aggressive 90 ensured Radlett dominated this game in intermittent drizzle, though in the end they were thwarted by a wet ball and lively Letchworth resistance down the order.

Radlett were put in on a good pitch on a pleasant tree-ringed former hospital ground that Letchworth have upgraded with ECB assistance. Before a run had been scored Paul Windmill, at No 2, was bowled first ball by a well disguised slow ‘knuckle’ delivery, but Bell and Charlie Randall put on 109 together to steady the ship and lay a platform for a good score.

Bell hammered some rusty bowling with some great leg-side shots in near-darkness, and Radlett would have raced to a bigger score if the tall Colin Croucher, a former Herts pace merchant, had not put on the brakes with slow medium from over the sightscreen that both batsmen struggled to see.

Croucher bowled Randall and then Bell, who was within sight of his first Radlett hundred. This proved to be only a hiccup as Dinesh Yogendra, the Newcastle University captain, took over with superbly judged strokes, well supported by the tail, and Bell declared an over early at 227 for seven.

Radlett had the bowling to protect such a score, and James Eyre found an immaculate length to remove the top three batsmen. In fact, with Yogendra weighing in with a smart run-out, Radlett had Letchworth six down for less than 100 with more than 20 overs remaining.

This time Radlett could not blame dropped catches. Letchworth, though never in the hunt, played some shots against the soaked ball when the bowling effort went a little flat. Radlett had only one over to take the final wicket.
