Radlett CC 5th XI v Datchworth III on Sat 13 May 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Won 5 wickets

Match report This years 5th XI campaign started at home against the recently promoted Datchworth visitors. The level of experience of Division 12 holds us in good stead and knowing our opponents over a couple of seasons will be a sureadvantage. The weather held out most of the day to provide a full day’s play but more Sun was anticipated. The introduction of the new Captain in Vikram Rajput should also bring a fresh head and eagerness to take this team to the top.

Vikram won the toss and elected to field there was enough firmness in the pitch at Queens to confirm having a bowl and weather conditions were favourable. Option of batting first for the away team at Queens is really a task as its unknown sometimes to both teams. Opening pair of Vikram and Michael Williams proved a handful for their aged batting pair who did well to stay at the crease. Vikram took first wicket with an appeal for lbw which was given especially with the batsman not offering any proper shots for 8 overs. The scoring rate was slow and trepid and Michael bowled a good first spell establishing line and length. The change brought Keerthi new Sri Lankan player to bowl some variation and movement which was too good for the batsman and they failed to recognise the deliveries at all. The scoring was barely under 2 an over and by the time the spinners came on they pushed to nearly 3 an over. Early spell of 10 overs by Vikram had contained the runs through accuracy and beating the bat on numerous occasions. Thereafter combination of Oliver Jackson and Ron Comfort allowed them to build an innings but with field placings tight and fielding quite active the spinners halted the opposition onslaught. Catches were held especially a surprise gully catch by Keerthi fully stretched and a run out orchestrated by Michael Williams from square leg. The enthusiasm and resilience by Radlett was quite forceful to deter Datchworth getting away with a large score with their late pair taking risky big shots to the boundary. Closing on 157 all out after 48 overs was not a bad effort at all.

Radlett innings opened with Mike Dexter and Vikram and the bowling was hardly quick enough to cause any errors at this stage. The new ball was played well and bowlers had to toil though run rate was kept below 2 per over which stayed low till the 26th over which must have raised Datchworth hopes. But oh no there lied the promising young stars of Nick Robinson with 11 and followed by Mark Turpin who has only played in his 2nd match for the 5th team in the ranks. Mark deposited the ball to all areas of the park with good stroke play and eye for picking the bad balls time and again. Mike and Mark put on under a 100 partnership to shatter Datchworths realistic hope of winning.

The match was quickly taken away from the fielding side as boundary after boundary emerged and Mark played a defiant 44 and Mike provided a solid 66 not out. A couple of dodgy lbws were given to Ron and Paul but Raguram hit the winning runs to end on 3 not out. Mike played an array of leg glances and drives that showed experience and dominance of the bowling.
Datchworth were a good sport and believed that they had met their match on the day in a positive and spirited Radlett XI to accept defeat on the day.

Mike Dexter was the key to the Radlett innings and was our Man of the Match.
