Radlett CC 4th XI v Hertford III on Sat 06 May 2006 at 13:30
Radlett CC Lost 5 wickets
Match report
Matt Bell's first game in charge saw an interesting contest between the 4's and Hertford III's.
Having won the toss Hertford had little hesitation in asking Radlett to bat first. Captain Bell and Vice captain Wells set about the task in confident fashion, both played plenty of aggressive shots. They managed to put on 60 for the first wicket before Wells was bowled by the evergreen Osgood for 29. Bell followed soon afterwards, but the good work was carried on by Randall and Australian James Eyre, making his league debut for the club.
The rain came down and forced and early tea to be taken, and sadly, both sides lost 7 overs. To the credit of both captains, they decided to ignore the rain and carry on the match (not to the delight of all the fielders!).
At 100 -2 Radlett seemed in a strong position and when Eyre continued his assault on the Hertford bowlers a strong total looked on the cards. James made an impressive 44 before being bowled by an off cutter, and Charles complied a patient 25. Some clean hitting by Meepa allowed Bell to declare one over early on 178-5.
Lederman and Eyre took the new ball aware that early wickets would be vital. When 'Dizzy' cleaned bowled the Hertford captain, Barnes for 12 Radlett looked to be holding all the aces.
As the drizzle continued, bowlers struggled more and more with gripping the ball and trying to keep their footing. This paired with a fantastic innings from the Hertford number 3 saw the game turned on its head. Catches were dropped and heads began to go down as Eaton powered his way to an unbeaten 106.
Menzies and Randall toiled away and picked up wickets at important times, but it was to be Hertford's day.
With very few games completed, 11 points was an acceptable start to the season, although as a unit our fielding needs to improve vastly. James's performance with bat and ball was very encouraging for the season ahead.
Hopefully cobwebs have been blown away for the trip to Letchworth next weekend.
