Radlett CC 1st XI v Oxford on Sun 04 Jun 2006 at 1:00
Radlett CC Lost 6 wickets
Match report
Radlett crashed out of the Evening Standard Trophy on Sunday as Home Counties Premier League Division 1 outfit Oxford visited Cobden Hill on Sunday and came away with the spoils in a 6 wicket victory. Radlett won the toss and elected to bat on what turned out to be a slow low pitch, and were made to struggle early on. Dave Taylor broke the shackles and unleashed some ferocious drives on his way to a run-a-ball 50 , but when he fell with the score at 77-3, caught at deep square leg, the innings needed consolidating. Graham Dill and Matt Evans combined to dteadily build a competitive total before Evans edged behind for 35. Simon Gray fell soon after, but skipper Daniel Chippeck provided some much needed impetus scoring a quickfire 28 and he and Dill (47) combined to take the score to 190-5 with 6 overs left. However both fell in successive overs to Stuart Hole, and the innings quickly subsided to 204 all out in the 49th over, Radlett committing the cardinal sin in limited overs cricket of not seeing
out the full allocation. as David Slade nipped in with 4-21.
The target was possibly 20 odd below par, despite the slow nature of the pitch, and it was made to look a pretty straight forward chase as the Hole brothers opened up for Oxford scoring at a rate of 7 an over. However Stuart Browne made a double strike, claiming Stuart Hole and Todd Hutcheson in quick succession, and when veteran keeper David Hanson pulled of a stunning legside stumping to dismiss John Williams off the bowling of Graham Dill, Oxford were 65-3 and the game was back in the balance. With
Dill and slow left armer David Hegarty bowling very tightly the pressure was on, but the vital 4th breakthrough eluded Radlett and , with Simon Hole dropping anchor, Shamilal Mendis gradually seized control and played a fine innings of 69 to take Oxford to the brink of victory. When he fell , just 24 were needed and Hole ground out the runs to finish 73 not out.
A dissappointed Radlett skipper, Daniel Chippeck said afterwards:" Going out of the ESCT is always a blow as we have a proud record of success in the tournament, however on the day we were not quite at our best and were beaten by the better side. They executed the basics better than we did and were deserved winners , with Mendis producing a terrific all round performance. I wish them all the best in the next round."
