Match report A quick report from Bernie – better than none at all.

This early season friendly was Kailash’s first as skipper and he did well to get a strong and well balanced team out for the fixture. Harpenden looked a bit weaker than us and so it proved, but we also had youngsters that performed very well.

We won the toss and inserted Harpenden to bat. They started reasonably well scoring at over 4 an over but their opener was unluckily bowled by Luke Paice with one that kept very low. We were not over concerned about their good start and when our spinners came on, the match changed from being 88/2 to 116 for 8, 3 wickets falling on 111, Triple Nelson. Kailash and Mike Crocker each took 3 wickets, Mike only going for 5 runs in his last 5 overs after conceding 15 in his first 2.
Kailash gave 10 players a bowl and Harpenden recovered to 161 for 9 in their designated 40 overs.
Our fielding was pretty sharp and it was good to see Phil Simmons looking alert in the field, even keeping wicket for the last few overs.
We opened with Will Wright and Matt Lewis and they also kept the scoring rate at 5 an over. Matt retired on 70 runs and whilst he had scored the majority of the runs at that time, Will was starting to rotate the strike well and thus keeping the scoring rate healthy, so we were pleased to have the match practically won. Will and Harry Will both became pretty aggressive, Will particularly punishing anything short so it was shame when he was needlessly run out when an easy run was in the offing.
Harry was out LBW and Hemant Morjaria and Ben Charles saw us home with over 7 overs to spare.
