Radlett CC 1st XI v Hemel Hempstead Town on Sun 20 Aug 2006 at 12:30
Radlett CC Lost 54 runs
Match report
A bad weekend for Radlett as a somewhat insipid performance saw the end of the Becker Cup campaign as Hemel Hempstead out played their HCPL rivals in all facets of the limited overs game. Batting first Hemel mad a positive start as openers Ilangaratne and Clark punished some wayward bowling, Ilangaratne in particular finding the leg side boundary with regularity. His dismissal, LBW to Stuart Browne for 25, brought Guyanese batsman Riccardo Mohammed to the crease and he and Clark saw off the new ball in determined fashion. The spin of David Hegarty and Rob Crocker was introduced and both responded with miserly spells, but Clark and Mohammed patiently built a vital partnership of 130. They took their time but laid the platform for an assault in the last 10 overs. That Hemel didn’t post more than the eventual 233 total was down to a fine spell at the death by Shane Burger who reeled off a succession of reverse swinging yorkers to pick up the wicket of Mohammed for a well made 75. Clark fell for 71 soon after, smartly stumped by young keeper Luca Guerrini off Graham Dill, and thereafter wickets fell but some vital runs were added as Hemel used their wickets in hand to strike out effectively.
In reply, Radlett struggled from the outset as Hemel seamers Waterman and Howard bowled immaculate line and length, and Chippeck fell in attempting to break the shackles by hitting over the top only to miscue to cover. Dill and Smith saw off the opening spell without further loss, but as the run rate required rose they had to force the pace against the spin of Hodgins and Mohammed, and both fell in quick succession to take the wind out of the chase. Burger and Hutchings attempted to rebuild but Hodgins in particular bowled an extremely accurate spell and he frustrated Hutchings into giving a catch to cover of a miscued attempted lofted drive. Despite Burgers best efforts, thereafter Radlett were never really in the hunt as the rate required rose inexorably. Wickets fell on a regular basis and the bell finally tolled for the home side when Burger was out for 59. The final overs meandered gently through as Hemel ran out comfortable and deserved winners by 54 runs, and they progress to the final where they will meet Potters Bar.
