Radlett CC 1st XI v Bishop's Stortford on Sun 30 Jul 2006 at 1:00
Radlett CC Won 43 runs

Match report Radlett were made to work extremely hard for their place in the semi final, as Herts League Division 2 leaders Bishops Stortford made the Home Counties Premier League club battle all the way to secure a 43 run win. If it was comfortable in the end, it was nothing like as straight forward as the scores suggest, as Radlett, having been invited to bat first, were reduced to 91-6 at the half way point of their innings. Of the top order, only Haydn Smith (43) and skipper Dan Chippeck (22) made any impact as impatience got the better of some experienced players, and wickets were frittered away in careless fashion. However, Radlett's strength in depth in the batting department has served them well all season, and on this occasion it was Shane Burger and Graham Dill that combined to produce a superb match winning and competition record 7th wicket partnership off 160 off 24 overs. Both men, played themselves in with due care and attention, before dealing harshly with a tiring attack as runs were plundered almost at will in the final 10 overs of the allocation. Burger eased his was to 50 before powering away to finish with 83 not out, whilst Dill sensibly played second fiddle batting with assurance and composure before falling in the final over for a well constructed 67. Experienced medium pacers Kevin Walls and Ruan Premadassa were the pick of the Stortford bowlers, combining for 2-80 off 19 overs between them.

In reply, Bishops Stortford made a steady start seeing off Burger and Stuart Browne's opening salvos with young openers Luke Padgett and Matt Surry playing in determined fashion. Left arm spinner David Hegarty was introduced early into the attack as Radlett looked to take the pace off the ball to strangle the scoring rate, and Hegarty responded in fine style bowling his 10 overs through for just 26. It was the introduction of Graham Dill that produced the breakthrough, Padgett losing patience and was smartly stumped by keeper Steve Lowe for 28. Eddie Ballard joined Surry and they slowly built a platform from which an assault could be launched and at 90-1 in the 26th over they were in a decent position, but Haydn Smith, a man in form with bat and ball, was introduced and immediately picked up Surry, caught at extra cover for 38. Premadassa hit a huge straight 6 and played aggressively until falling to Smith, and once Ballard fell for an accomplished 58, lbw to Browne, wickets fell at regular intervals, and Burger polished off the tail with a succession of reverse swinging yorkers as he claimed 3-30, Smith collected 3-52, as Stortford fell some 43 short.

Radlett will go on to play HCPL Division 2 (East) rivals Hemel Hempstead in the semi final, to be staged at the Brunton Memorial Ground at Cobden Hill on August 20th. The other semi-final is between West Herts and Potters Bar.
